According to the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection ( Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ), expanding this list creates favorable conditions to increase durian exports to the Chinese market.
Localities and businesses need to proactively take advantage of this opportunity, while ensuring strict compliance with regulations on plant quarantine and food safety in order to export sustainably.
China is currently Vietnam's largest durian export market, accounting for about 91% of total durian export turnover in 2024, equivalent to nearly 3 billion USD.
According to Mr. Huynh Tan Dat, Director of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment), this continues to be a strategic market, playing a decisive role in the growth momentum of the Vietnamese durian industry in the medium and long term.
In the first months of 2025, durian exports slowed down, mainly due to China's increased quality control measures, especially indicators on heavy metal residues such as cadmium and the discovery of residues of yellow O - a substance that is strictly banned in agriculture.
This is a signal that market demand is increasing, and the Vietnamese durian industry needs to quickly adjust to adapt.
To fundamentally resolve these problems, the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection said it has coordinated with the police to strictly handle the production, trade and use of yellow O - to protect the industry's overall reputation.
Standardize the safe durian production process, focusing on soil, water, fertilizer and pesticides, thereby reducing the risk of cadmium residue in the product. This process is being completed and will be transferred to localities in May.
For localities producing durian for export to China, the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection recommends ensuring that all growing area codes and packaging facilities are issued and operate in accordance with regulations, have complete technical records, and are regularly inspected and monitored.
"With timely adjustments and synchronous participation from the central to local levels, especially improving the quality of growing areas, strictly controlling production processes and tightening traceability, the Vietnamese durian industry will soon restore growth momentum in the last 6 months of 2025, taking advantage of opportunities when the main crop starts in July" - Director of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection believes.
