SEA Games 32 cuts many Olympic sports, what disadvantages does the Vietnamese sports delegation have?

VTC NewsVTC News24/04/2023

The Vietnamese Sports Delegation participated in the 32nd SEA Games with 700 athletes. The goal of the delegation is to win from 90 to 120 gold medals and be in the top 3. This is a modest number compared to the record of 205 gold medals that the Vietnamese Sports Delegation achieved at the 31st SEA Games.

However, the significant decrease in the number of medals and gold medals of Vietnamese sports is understandable. One of the reasons is that the host Cambodia did not include some of Vietnam's strong sports, including Olympic events, in the competition program of the Games.

Shooting was removed from the competition program of SEA Games 32.

Compared to the 31st SEA Games, the sports that were cut accounted for a significant number of gold medals. Specifically, Canoeing and Rowing brought home 16 gold medals at the previous Games. However, this year the host cut these two Olympic sports and added the traditional Jet Ski and Sailing to the competition program.

Chess was eliminated from the 32nd SEA Games. This sport brought 7 gold medals to Vietnamese sports. This year, the organizers replaced it with conch shell chess, which has many similarities to chess. However, this is the strong sport of the host Cambodia, so it is difficult for the Vietnamese conch shell chess team to achieve good results.

Kurash brought 7 gold medals to Vietnam but this year it is not included in the competition program. Shooting (7 gold medals), Bodybuilding (5 gold medals), Muay (4 gold medals), Handball (3 gold medals) were also removed from the 32nd SEA Games.

In addition, in martial arts and combat, the host country has a regulation that countries can only register a maximum of 70% of the content. While the host country has the right to register 100% of the content. This also greatly affects the chance of winning gold medals for Vietnamese sports. Last year, martial arts brought home about 80 gold medals. With the above regulation, the number of gold medals in martial arts at the 32nd SEA Games of the Vietnamese sports delegation will decrease significantly.

According to the regulations of the 32nd SEA Games, in some martial arts, sports delegations (except the host) are only allowed to register 70% of the total number of events. This further reduces the chances of the Vietnamese sports delegation competing for gold medals.

The 32nd SEA Games is scheduled to take place from May 5 to May 18 in Cambodia. Football will be the first event when the teams start competing from April 29.
