Luke Shaw has spoken out about the toxic culture at Manchester United. |
Speaking during Manchester United's pre-season tour of the US, Shaw told The Times : "It's not hard to see how bad things are at the club. Over the last few years, the environment at Manchester United has been very negative. It's become toxic, unhealthy. Players need a positive environment, full of energy and happiness. When you have that, you feel free and you express yourself better."
Shaw also admitted that defeat in the Europa League final in May had left the club in a bad state, with the entire squad in a state of uncertainty about the future: “After that final, no one knew what was going to happen. I had a terrible year. I was absolutely furious about everything.”
The English left-back also supported coach Amorim's decision to clean up the squad, saying that the Portuguese strategist is looking to refresh the atmosphere in the team: "The player's mentality is an important factor. The coach talks a lot about this. He asks everyone to give 100% effort and does not accept anything else. I think next season, if you do not do what the coach says, do not bring positivity, you will not be on the field."
Shaw did not directly mention the club's current "surplus" group of players - including Rashford (who recently moved to Barcelona), Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Tyrell Malacia and Antony. However, the England defender insisted that the United dressing room is very united at the moment and everyone must put the team first.
