Jannik Sinner continued his impressive run of form at this year's Cincinnati Open, beating Adrian Mannarino 6-4, 7-6(4) in a rain-interrupted match. In the third round, the defending champion's match suffered from electrical and fire alarm problems. Sinner is one step closer to defending his title and winning his first ATP Masters 1000 title of the season.
Despite not being at his best, Sinner still showed dominance over the French player. The match was interrupted for nearly 3 hours due to rain at the beginning of the second set. In a tense opening set, the ATP No. 1 created a breakthrough moment when he came back from 2-4 down, with a decisive backhand from deep in the court after clearing a strong Mannarino smash.

Sinner only completed 52% of his first serves and struggled to find his rhythm from the baseline in the second set. However, after failing to close out the match at 6-5, the 23-year-old kept his composure in the tiebreak to win the match.
"Mannarino is a very difficult opponent, very different from the others, not only because he is left-handed but also because of the way he hits the ball. He hits very low. I tried to serve well and see what I could do on the returns. He served very well, especially from the forehand, and from the sideline he was very accurate. I changed positions, trying to make him feel uncomfortable. I had a little bit of difficulty to finish the match, but this can happen in this sport and I am happy to be in the next round," Sinner shared.
With the 1 hour 48 minute victory, Sinner extended his hard court winning streak to 24 matches, surpassing Novak Djokovic's record of 23 wins in 2015 and moving up to eighth place on the list of longest hard court winning streaks of this century. The Italian's last hard court defeat was to Carlos Alcaraz in the final in Beijing last October.
Sinner now leads Mannarino 4-0 in the head-to-head series and will next face either 23rd seed Felix Auger-Aliassime or Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi in his fifth quarterfinal of the year. The 23-year-old has won his last 21 matches against Frenchmen.
Entering his first tournament since winning Wimbledon, Sinner is 29-3 on the season and is just eight wins away from reaching 300 career victories. Sinner became the second player to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals in November, joining Alcaraz. Sinner and Alcaraz will be locked in a fierce battle for the year's number one title over the remaining months. Alcaraz currently leads Sinner by 1,440 points in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin.
Mannarino, meanwhile, surprised by beating Tommy Paul to reach the fourth round of a Masters 1000 for the first time since reaching the quarterfinals in Cincinnati two years ago. The 37-year-old found joy with his left-handed serve against Sinner, but was eventually defeated in the second-set tiebreak. Mannarino moved up 18 places to No. 71 in the ATP live rankings.
