According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, Apple considered turning to OpenAI or Anthropic to help upgrade the AI features for Siri. Apple representatives met with both companies, proposing to create specialized versions of large language models for testing on private cloud infrastructure.
For months, Apple has been working to get Siri AI back on track after delaying its launch in March. Apple appointed Mike Rockwell, head of Vision Pro, as head of AI and Siri, replacing former executive John Giannandrea.
According to Bloomberg, Rockwell asked employees to test whether Claude (Anthropic), ChatGPT (OpenAI), or Gemini (Google) handled basic requests better than their own models, with Anthropic's model appearing to be the most promising.
Apple's move comes as Android rivals have made strides in integrating AI assistants into their phones. Google has Gemini AI features for Android and the Pixel line, and Samsung licenses Google's AI model for its Galaxy line.
Samsung is also reportedly close to a deal with Perplexity, which has partnered with Motorola to bring AI models to smartphones. Earlier in June, Bloomberg reported that Apple executives were considering acquiring Perplexity to help advance its AI ambitions.
Siri's AI features were barely mentioned at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in early June, with senior vice president of worldwide marketing Greg Joswiak admitting that the technology "doesn't meet our quality standards."
Bloomberg notes that Apple's plans to integrate third-party AI models into Siri are only in the "early stages" and that the company is still considering using internal models.
