"Our forensic team has exhumed 22 bodies today..." Rhodah Onyancha, a regional commissioner, told reporters in the Shakahola forest in southwestern Kenya, where the search is continuing. She added that a suspect had also been arrested, bringing the total number of people in custody to 26.
Throughout the week, authorities dug shallow graves scattered in the woods to search for bodies and combed the area for any survivors as hundreds of people were still reported missing.
On Friday, 29 bodies were exhumed, including 12 children's bodies found in one grave.
A Kenyan court on Wednesday denied bail to Paul Mackenzie, the leader of the Good News International Church, who is accused of ordering his followers to starve their children and themselves to death so they could go to heaven before the end of the world.
