Using sand from dredging Co Co River to rebuild temporary dam on Vinh Dien River

On July 16, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Da Nang said that the temporary dam project to prevent saltwater intrusion on Vinh Dien River is being rebuilt after being washed away by floods caused by storm No. 1 (Wutip) on June 12, 2025, to ensure irrigation water for summer-autumn crop production.

Regarding the difficulty in sand sources for dam construction, the Dien Ban Area Investment and Construction Project Management Board has requested relevant units to continue to take sand from the project of Dredging, Emergency Flood Drainage and Prevention of Saltwater Intrusion of Co Co River for re-damming.

According to Quang Nam Province Irrigation Exploitation Company Limited, salinity has penetrated deep into Vinh Dien River. The highest salinity measured at Tu Cau Bridge on July 14 was 1.7 parts per thousand and at Tu Cau Pump Station's suction tank on July 15 was 0.5 parts per thousand.

With the prolonged hot weather, the water source downstream of the Vu Gia - Thu Bon river system has decreased, combined with high tides, leading to continued saline intrusion, posing a risk of affecting the operation of water pumping stations serving summer-autumn agricultural production of about 2,000 hectares as well as the water supply to Hoi An Water Plant and the source for Ha Chau and Cam Thanh pumping stations in Hoi An Tay and Hoi An Dong wards.

The company has sent a document requesting relevant departments, branches, units and localities to promptly remove obstacles regarding material sources (sand) to soon complete the rebuilding of the seasonal dam to prevent salinity on Vinh Dien River.

At the same time, it is recommended that hydropower plants on the upper Vu Gia - Thu Bon River increase water discharge and maintain stable flow downstream to ensure fresh water for agricultural production until the end of the summer-autumn crop in 2025.
