Karim Benzema was once one of the best strikers in the world . |
At the Paris Correctional Court, the trial between Didier Deschamps - France coach - and journalist Daniel Riolo revealed never-before-revealed details about Benzema's injury at the 2022 World Cup. Riolo was sued by the France coach for allegedly mishandling the French striker's recovery process, according to AS .
According to Deschamps in court, Benzema admitted that he could not continue to participate in the World Cup right after the test on the night of November 19 to the morning of November 20, 2022. The relationship between the two sides was still good at that time. Deschamps sent encouraging messages and Benzema responded positively, although he admitted to being sad and disappointed.
The conflict only broke out when the French media questioned whether Benzema would leave Qatar on his own. Deschamps denied it, but the striker posted on social media implying that his former coach was a “liar”. The atmosphere between the two sides became tense.
Journalist Daniel Riolo then contacted Hakim Chalabi, PSG's medical director, and the doctor at Aspetar. Chalabi said Benzema only suffered a grade 1 tear. This conclusion contradicted the assessment of the French team doctor, Le Gall, who had announced that the 37-year-old striker had a grade 2 tear.
During the hearing, Le Gall criticized Chalabi and downplayed the professional reputation of the Aspetar clinic. He said the Qatari doctor exaggerated his position and was not a reliable reference.
The conflicting testimonies have made the trial the focus of French media, with a verdict expected on January 30. This is also a rare occasion when behind-the-scenes elements of the 2022 World Cup have been brought to court, revealing a deep rift between Deschamps and Benzema after the tournament in Qatar.
