- Faced with the complicated situation of human trafficking crimes, women's associations at all levels have proactively built a solid "shield" to protect women and children, especially in border villages. Through a variety of activities from raising awareness to supporting livelihoods, women's "soft power", perseverance and empathy have saved many lives, lighting up hope for a safe and humane society.
Although she has been back in Vietnam for more than 14 years, every time she recalls the time she was tricked and sold to China, Ms. LTN from Van Lang commune is still shocked. In 1995, when N was only 16 years old, she was lured by a sister in the village to cross the border with the promise of seeing her mother (who had gone to China before and had lost contact). The family's poverty, lack of food, and the desire to see her mother made the young girl LTN gullible enough to believe it.
After being taken across the border, N was locked up with more than 30 women in a small room, then sold to a Chinese man to be his wife. From then on, LTN lived a series of hard labor days. After 3 months, N and a woman from Thanh Hoa risked their lives to escape into the forest and were lucky to escape.
Talking to reporters, Ms. N choked up and shared: After running away from my first family, I still did not know the way back to Vietnam. Without papers or relatives, I had to listen to a local woman and marry a man a few years older than me. I lived silently like that for 16 years, just hoping to return home one day. In 2011, while selling goods at the market, I accidentally heard a Vietnamese accent , saw my fellow countrymen, and burst into tears, as if I had found myself again after many years of being lost. Luckily, some women took pity on me, pooled some money for me, and showed me the way to escape back. Thanks to the kindness of those people far from home, I was able to cross the border and return home in December 2011.
After returning to her hometown, with the attention of the Women's Union, Ms. N was supported to redo her personal documents, creating conditions for her to stabilize her life. Ms. N shared more: Returning to her hometown with empty hands, I was regularly visited, encouraged, and given gifts by the Women's Union on Tet holidays. In 2020, when I built a house, I was supported by the sisters with labor days. In addition, the sisters in the Women's Union at all levels often introduced me to seasonal jobs with an income of about 5 to 7 million VND/month. Now, my life is basically stable, although I live alone, I feel very comfortable and happy.
Not only Ms. N, many other women have also become victims of human trafficking. According to statistics, in the first 6 months of 2025, the authorities discovered, investigated and clarified 2 cases with 3 subjects involved in human trafficking, and successfully rescued 2 victims. Notably, the number of cases increased by 2 cases compared to the whole year of 2024, showing that human trafficking crimes are still complicated and pose many potential risks in the community.
In order to raise awareness of preventing and combating human trafficking for members and the people, in recent times, women's associations at all levels in the province have carried out various propaganda activities. Through direct talks, integration into branch and club activities, or organizing seminars, exchanges, forums and legal competitions, knowledge about the Law on Prevention and Combating Human Trafficking and sophisticated criminal tricks have been widely disseminated. Since the beginning of 2024, more than 1,000 propaganda sessions have been organized, thereby reaching over 100,000 officials, members and women.
Ms. Duong Thi Thu Thao, Vice President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee, President of the Women's Union of Quoc Khanh Commune, said: Currently, the commune has over 2,200 female members. As a border commune, we have always focused on propaganda to prevent and combat human trafficking. Every year, we organize many diverse propaganda activities such as: oral propaganda, hanging banners and slogans; distributing leaflets; propaganda integrated into village meetings, party cell meetings... The propaganda content focuses on identifying signs and sophisticated tricks of human trafficking criminals, warning about illegal border crossings and raising awareness for members as well as people in the community.
Through communication work on preventing and combating human trafficking, members actively participate in denouncing crimes in general, especially human trafficking crimes, which are focused on, especially in the border communes of the province.
Along with propaganda, from 2024 to present, the associations at all levels have established and maintained 107 "Trusted Addresses", exceeding 94% of the project's target. Especially in the first 7 months of this year, the associations at all levels have continued to effectively implement the content of Project 8: "Implementing gender equality and solving urgent issues for women and children" (under the National Target Program for Ethnic Minorities and Mountainous Areas for the period 2021 - 2030, Phase I: 2021 - 2025).
Along with the above activities, the associations at all levels also pay special attention to supporting livelihoods, creating conditions for women to develop their economy sustainably. Through appropriate economic models, support for members to borrow capital, provide vocational training and connect product consumption, coordinate to organize scientific and technical training, support plants, seeds, labor days, etc. From 2024 to the first 6 months of 2025, the associations at all levels have entrusted the Social Policy Bank to lend capital to members to develop the economy with a total outstanding loan balance of over 1,700 billion VND with more than 24,000 borrowing households; coordinate with enterprises, production and business establishments to organize training courses, vocational training, and vocational training for nearly 2,000 female workers. Through this, over 80% of women in the association have stable incomes, improving their position in the family and society, helping women to be financially stable, thereby avoiding falling into the trap of human traffickers.
Ms. Vu Thi Huyen Trang, Vice President of the Provincial Women's Union, said: Promoting "soft power" in the work of preventing and combating human trafficking, in the coming time, the Provincial Women's Union will continue to direct all levels of the union to promote propaganda and raise awareness for women and people, especially in remote areas, border areas - where there are many potential risks of becoming victims of human trafficking crimes. At the same time, the Union will also promptly encourage and support cases of female victims to soon stabilize their lives and reintegrate into the community. Along with that, effective models of preventing and combating human trafficking will continue to be maintained and expanded; coordination with grassroots Party committees and authorities in propaganda, dissemination and education of the law will be strengthened to build a solid prevention network from the grassroots.
It can be said that in the fight against human trafficking, the role of women is not only as the object that needs to be protected but also as the pioneer force in propaganda and prevention work so that no more lives become victims of human trafficking crimes.
