At WWDC 2025 in June 2025, Apple introduced Live Translation for FaceTime, Messages, and Calls, but did not mention it for AirPods. If implemented, the new feature would likely capture the speech of the person speaking to you, translate it into the user’s language, and play it live through the headphones. Conversely, the user’s voice could also be translated and played through the phone’s speaker to the other person.
Bloomberg believes that wearable devices are the ideal platform for live translation, similar to the Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses.
iOS 26 is expected to launch next September, most likely around the same time Apple introduces the new iPhone.
The live translation feature on AirPods is said to be compatible with iPhone models that support Apple Intelligence, taking advantage of Apple Intelligence's processing capabilities to speed up response times and secure data.
However, implementation will face many challenges: Ensuring accuracy when processing language in noisy environments, recognizing different voices, handling dialects or slang, while maintaining fast response speeds so that conversations are not interrupted.
