The pair Alice Nguyen Thi Thanh Phuong (Vietnam) and Louie (Philippines) have impressively reached the semi-finals of the World Tango Championship.

The Argentine Embassy in Vietnam organized a small meeting between Alice Nguyen Thi Thanh Phuong and several journalists in Hanoi on October 2nd.

The Argentine ambassador is proud of tango dancer Thanh Phuong.

Ambassador Marcos A. Bednarski stated that the World Tango Championship - Mundial de tango, held annually in Buenos Aires, Argentina, is an international arts and sports event that brings together thousands of dancers from all over the world.

After winning the 2025 Philippines qualifying round, the pair Alice Nguyen Thi Thanh Phuong (Vietnam) and Louie (Philippines) were automatically advanced to the quarterfinals. From there, they continued to overcome intense rounds with hundreds of strong competitors from around the world, officially making it into the top 125 pairs in the semifinals.

Commenting on the achievement of the duo Thanh Phuong and Louie in an interview with Tuoi Tre Online, Ambassador Marcos A. Bednarski said that Thanh Phuong is the first Vietnamese dancer to participate in a tango competition in Argentina and reach the semi-finals, which is very talented. This is because the competition attracts a large number of talented contestants from countries with developed tango dance movements.

Having seen Thanh Phuong perform the previous year, Marcos A. Bednarski noticed that the dancer possessed good technique and, in particular, demonstrated passion and talent in her dances. Therefore, he was not surprised when Thanh Phuong reached the semi-finals; he felt proud of that achievement.

Tango Day will be held in Vietnam.

Regarding the tango movement in Vietnam, Ambassador Marcos A. Bednarski said that from the beginning of his term in Vietnam, he was surprised by the tango community here.

He encountered lively dance groups on the streets, in parks, and gardens, including those performing incredibly captivating tango pieces. He stated that he would support and accompany the activities of the Vietnamese tango community.

Most recently, on December 11-12 – World Tango Day – the Argentine Embassy will organize a tango dance night at the National Library (Hanoi). Some valuable photographs and documents about tango in Argentina – the birthplace of tango – will be donated to the National Library of Vietnam.

Earlier, in 2024, on World Tango Day, he also organized a tango night at the ambassador's residence.

Dancer Thanh Phuong said that this achievement is a motivation for her to continue her journey of building a stronger, more organized, and more cohesive Vietnamese tango community. She said she is currently working on establishing a Vietnamese Tango Academy specializing in tango training, as well as organizing activities to closely connect with the international tango community.

Born in 1978 in Da Lat, Thanh Phuong began pursuing tango in 2007 when she moved to Ho Chi Minh City.

She only truly dedicated herself to tango from 2019 onwards, when the COVID-19 pandemic occurred, causing many changes in her life and work.

She was previously a teacher and an office worker.
