According to BGR , a group of researchers at the University of California, Berkeley (USA) has just stunned the technology world when they announced that they have successfully recreated the core technology of DeepSeek - a popular AI model - at a cost of only 30 USD.
DeepSeek's Core Technology Recreated for 'Piece of Gold'
The information was published by Jiayi Pan, a PhD student who led the research team, on the Nitter platform. Accordingly, the team used a small language model, just 3 billion parameters, to replicate the reinforcement learning capabilities of DeepSeek R1-Zero. Notably, this model still demonstrated the ability to self-verify and search - key features that help DeepSeek refine its responses.

To test it, the team had the model play a game called Countdown, a type of arithmetic puzzle. Initially, the model generated random answers, but after reinforcement learning, it adjusted itself and came up with the correct answer. When faced with complex multiplication, the model even analyzed and solved the problem in a similar way to humans.
What surprised the tech world was the low cost of reproducing DeepSeek – just $30. This figure is too small compared to the billions of dollars that 'giants' like OpenAI, Google or Microsoft are spending on AI development. This research shows that developing powerful AI models does not necessarily come with a huge budget.
However, there are also skeptics about the veracity of DeepSeek’s claims, especially regarding the cost of training the model. AI researcher Nathan Lambert questioned whether DeepSeek’s $5 million figure truly reflects its costs, and pointed to concerns about DeepSeek transferring data to China.
Despite the controversy, the Berkeley team’s research demonstrates that advanced reinforcement learning can be achieved without huge investments. This could revolutionize AI, allowing small companies and independent researchers to join the technology race.
