On the day we visited, the headquarters of Hamlet 5 was bustling with activity. Mr. Danh Sum chaired the year-end Party branch meeting. The meeting lasted longer than expected; the sun was high in the sky, but everyone was still focused on discussing Party member development, reviewing economic models, and preparing plans to ensure the villagers had a fulfilling and safe Tet holiday. Speaking slowly but decisively, he directly addressed outstanding issues, listening to each contribution before assigning tasks to each Party member. At the end of the meeting, he smiled kindly: "There's a lot to do at the end of the year. Our villagers are counting on the Party branch, so we have to discuss things thoroughly and do them properly."
Hamlet 5 has over 500 households, including more than 200 Khmer households and 4 Hoa households. Previously, households engaged in fragmented production, and their lives were difficult. In 2020, the hamlet still had 5 poor households and 18 near-poor households. "The Party Committee persistently went door-to-door, encouraging people to change their farming methods. The hamlet established an agricultural cooperative with over 100 members and a crop cultivation group, opening up a more efficient production direction," said Mr. Danh Sum.
To date, the hamlet has only 1 poor household and 9 near-poor households; the number of well-off and wealthy households has increased. Many Khmer families have renovated their houses, bought vehicles, and provided their children with better education. One particularly touching case is that of Ms. Thi Ngoc Mung. In 2018, her husband left, leaving behind two young children. Homeless, she brought her children to Hamlet 5 to seek refuge with relatives. Knowing her situation, Mr. Danh Sum mobilized neighbors to contribute labor to build a temporary house and guided her in obtaining a loan from the Social Policy Bank. A few years later, he continued to mobilize resources to renovate the house, making it more spacious, and helped her borrow an additional 50 million VND to open a restaurant and sell coffee at home. Thanks to their hard work, the lives of Ms. Mung and her three children have gradually stabilized. Ms. Mung said emotionally, "If it weren't for Mr. Sum and the neighbors, my children and I wouldn't know how to survive. I am very grateful; it's the motivation for me to strive every day."
Each year, Hamlet 5 mobilizes between 200 and 1,000 gifts, notebooks, and school supplies to support poor households and students in difficult circumstances. In 2025, the hamlet mobilized resources to build and repair 5 solidarity houses. Mr. Danh Sum assisted 26 households in obtaining loans from the Social Policy Bank, totaling over 1 billion VND. Not only does he mobilize social resources, but he also uses his personal funds to help many disadvantaged people. During the annual Solidarity Day, he always prepares additional gifts for households in need. In the 2025-2026 school year, attending the opening ceremony at Thu Ba 3 Town Primary School, seeing the schoolyard was low, covered in moss, and dilapidated, he donated 3 million VND from his own pocket to support repairs. Seeing his meaningful actions, parents and villagers joined hands to contribute, helping to make the schoolyard cleaner and more beautiful.
Thanks to providing support to the right people at the right time, resources from the State and social mobilization have been effectively utilized, creating consensus and credibility for the Party branch. Ms. Thi Nhan, a Party member of the Party branch in Hamlet 5, shared that Mr. Danh Sum always works with a high sense of responsibility, understanding the circumstances of each household to provide timely and appropriate support. As a result, there has been a noticeable improvement in the lives of the Khmer people. For the Party members in the branch, he is a man of action, unafraid of difficulties or conflicts in order to protect the common good. What the people value most about him is his sincerity and wholehearted dedication to the community.
For the people of Hamlet 5, Mr. Danh Sum is a solid pillar of support, always there to help whenever needed. With his sense of responsibility and sincerity, he continues to play a key role in uniting and contributing to the sustainable development of Hamlet 5.
