In localities with ethnic minority students, plans have been proactively developed and implemented to teach Vietnamese to ethnic minority children before entering grade 1 to help them easily access general knowledge.

Currently, in many localities, first graders from ethnic minority areas are using Vietnamese as a second language when learning science subjects and they lack Vietnamese language skills.

Forming some basic learning skills and Vietnamese language proficiency for ethnic minority children before entering grade 1 plays an important role in improving the quality of teaching and learning.

Ethnic minority children still communicate in their mother tongue at home.

Teacher Nguyen Thi Sen - a teacher in Kon Tum said: "Ethnic minority children in the area still communicate in their mother tongue at home. The children are just starting preschool, so the school focuses on improving their communication and speaking skills in Vietnamese. During class, children are enhanced with Vietnamese through listening, speaking, writing Vietnamese communication sentences, getting used to using textbooks, materials I speak Vietnamese, how to use small boards... Thereby helping the children feel confident to enter grade 1."

Ms. Sen shared that most children entering first grade without being reinforced with Vietnamese do not know or cannot speak Vietnamese fluently. Therefore, teachers select lessons suitable for local students, helping students listen, understand, and answer teachers' questions. Teachers also equip students with writing skills, stabilize discipline, and integrate familiarity with letters.

A representative of the Department of Education and Training of Kon Tum province said that in recent years, the work of enhancing Vietnamese language for ethnic minority children has always been of interest to the provincial education sector, and has been directed and implemented. For preschool level, units focus on enhancing Vietnamese speaking practice for children from 3 to 5 years old through music , literature, and writing activities.

In the 2021-2023 period, 100% of 5-year-old ethnic minority preschool children were given Vietnamese language enhancement before entering grade 1. As a result, schools conducted 16,807 Vietnamese language enhancement lessons and 1,202,862 tutoring and enrichment lessons for preschool children.

In addition, the Department of Education and Training of Kon Tum province has also proactively compiled documents to enhance Vietnamese for 5-year-old children preparing to enter grade 1, which has been well received by schools and enjoyed by students; ensuring the readiness of 5-year-old children to enter grade 1.

Using Vietnamese for ethnic minority children before entering grade 1 plays an important role.

With the locality having more than 70% of students being ethnic minorities, Lao Cai province always pays much attention to developing education in ethnic minority areas.

Director of the Department of Education and Training of Lao Cai province, Duong Bich Nguyet, said that in the 2023-2024 school year, the province has 61,027 ethnic minority students, accounting for 71.5%. Realizing that teaching and learning Vietnamese for children before entering grade 1 is an extremely necessary issue, every year, the Department of Education and Training of the province develops a plan to enhance Vietnamese for ethnic minority students in the area. Up to now, all schools have built a friendly Vietnamese language enhancement environment for ethnic minority students such as: Multi-function libraries, green libraries, mobile libraries, making large and small comics; organizing reading camps; building community libraries in villages; increasing experiential activities such as Parents' Day with their children learning Vietnamese at home to improve students' listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.
