Coach Nguyen Quoc Hung shared: In 2024, the Taekwondo team will train and compete in 4/4 domestic tournaments and 3 international tournaments such as the Asian Taekwondo Championship in Da Nang, the Southeast Asian University Sports Festival Taekwondo Tournament in Indonesia and the World Taekwondo Boxing Championship in Hong Kong.
Regarding expertise, Mr. Hung said that the team received the attention and in-depth investment from the leaders of the sports and physical training sector, especially the Binh Thuan Province Sports Training and Competition Center and related units that created all favorable conditions for the sport. In addition, thanks to the enthusiastic care, help and support of parents, as well as the dedicated care and help of Mr. Nguyen Thanh Huy, Head Coach of the Vietnam Taekwondo team.
The total number of medals won in 2024 with 46 medals of all types/30 assigned medals, reaching a rate of 153.33%. The success of the team is thanks to the enthusiasm of the coaching team and the determination of the athletes, considering training and competition as their responsibility and obligation, always striving for the cause of physical education and sports of the country in general and of Binh Thuan province in particular. Currently, there are 12 athletes studying at universities in Ho Chi Minh City, participating in all tournaments during the year, achieving and exceeding the set targets, with 9 athletes achieving national masters.
During the year, 3 athletes were called up to the national team: Nguyen Thi Le Kim (born in 1992), a national athlete; Nguyen Thi Kim Ha (born in 2000), a national athlete; Tran Phuong Nhung (born in 2003), a national athlete. During the year, 1 athlete was awarded a certificate of merit by the Ministry of Education and Training, 4 athletes and 1 coach were awarded a certificate of merit by the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee for their excellent achievements in regional, continental and world competitions in 2024. 10/4 female athletes were promoted from youth to national team and 9/6 female athletes were promoted from gifted to youth.
Currently, the Taekwondo team's coaching board has 4 coaches. The Taekwondo team's coaching board is a united, enthusiastic group that always seeks to learn about professional expertise, always strives to complete all targets and tasks set by the leaders. However, there are still certain limitations, that is, the professional level of the athletes is uneven, most of them are young, young, and have very modest career experience, especially after many cycles of the National Sports Festival, the team has stopped training some older athletes.
In addition, the budget is still limited, so there are few participants in competitions, and the competition equipment is too rudimentary to meet the current competition needs. In recent years, the plan for the Taekwondo team to participate in competitions is too small, so there is not much competition experience. The allocation of competition budget for domestic tournaments in the year at 420 million VND/3 tournaments for all 3 levels is not enough to meet the needs. The current tournament system almost all uses electronic helmets, so our athletes rarely practice with electronic helmets, rubbing against helmets, leading to low results.
Coach Nguyen Quoc Hung added that in 2025, the team will overcome difficulties to continue to participate with the coaches in 4 official domestic competitions and 5 international competitions. We will invite Mr. Nguyen Thanh Huy - Vice President and General Secretary of the Vietnam Taekwondo Federation, Head Coach of the national Taekwondo team to help the team professionally. The coaching staff will strive to overcome limitations, especially in competition experience for athletes during their university studies to ensure effectiveness.
