Vu Liem is known as a famous screenwriter of prime-time films such as: "The One", "Black Medicine", "Investigation Team No. 7", "Mirror Mask"...
Besides his feature films, few people know that he is also diligently and quietly working on prose, having won the C prize in the Writing Contest and Literary Creation Camp on the theme of the image of the People's Police soldier organized by the Ministry of Public Security in coordination with the Vietnam Writers' Association in 2022.
It is known that he will continue to release literary works to readers in the near future, which shows that Vu Liem always has the mindset of dedicating himself to his passion for art.
The long story collection "Hour of Repentance" is a story about the journey of solving a case of a veteran investigator named Duy. In a murder case, he has to face the dark past, from there find the light to realize his good-hearted identity.

The character Duy himself is also an imperfect person like many normal people, with a full range of emotions that sometimes erupt excessively due to psychological trauma. But above all, he always realizes that the most important thing in his life is not only searching for the past but also the fighting ideal, which always urges him to find the right and eliminate evil.
On the other hand, the villain has harbored hatred since childhood. Readers will realize that the two main protagonists and the central antagonist of the story are two half-brothers. The villain was haunted by his father abandoning him and his brother to go to a new family since childhood. That is why he hates his biological father as well as his half-brother. He decides to turn that poor brother into a tool to carry out his crimes.
This is a criminal of high intelligence, so he almost succeeded in realizing the idea of manipulating a large part of the population in society to serve his crazy intentions. This is the type of character with an anti-social personality, always having the illusion that he has the power to change or manipulate the fate of others.

In the end, the one who thought he was absolutely smart had to accept defeat. Only those who have complete faith and ideals will never care about winning or losing. Because if you stay steadfast in your beliefs, the right thing will come. Perhaps that is the humane message that the author wants to convey through the story collection "The Hour of Repentance".
Writer Bui Tuan Minh commented: "The Hour of Repentance" is not only tight in structure and scientific in logic, but readers are easily drawn into the thrilling and engaging details with different levels of emotions and finally burst into joy in the suspenseful but very humane ending. Perhaps, the experience and sharp vision of the screenwriter helped him create such a dramatic yet well-rounded and humane literary work."
Artistically, a work that deals deeply with the topic of the police seems to easily fall into the nature of propaganda and one-sided praise, making the work lack artistic depth. However, in "Hour of Repentance", the author has skillfully harmonized between portraying the image of a police officer and the hidden corners and inner conflicts, accepting to directly experience the fight to create appeal and humanity.
The author creates unexpected details, but very cleverly arranges the pieces of the plot and character behavior to maintain logic and appeal to the story.
The story of the case is not too long, told in a fast, dramatic, cinematic style, with smooth and subtle transitions that bring the reader into different emotions without being able to leave the book. The character's alter egos and psychological developments lead the reader into many different emotional perspectives.
It must also be said that the author has many years of experience in the field of criminal psychology and is very knowledgeable about the work, organization, and operations of the police force, from the investigation process, professional factors to criminal psychology... creating the persuasiveness and credibility of the work.
Vu Liem, born and raised in Hanoi's Old Quarter, graduated from the Screenwriting Department, Hanoi Academy of Theatre and Cinema; currently Deputy Director of People's Public Security Cinema.
