On April 20, the Soyuz MS-26 spacecraft carrying an American astronaut and two Russian cosmonauts landed safely in the steppe of Kazakhstan, ending a 220-day mission on the International Space Station (ISS).
Notably, this return to Earth coincides with the 70th birthday of Mr. Donald (Don) Pettit, the oldest astronaut still working at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
According to the announcement of the Russian Space Agency Roscosmos, at 4:20 a.m. on April 20 (Moscow time, ie 8:20 a.m. Vietnam time), the Soyuz MS-26 spacecraft carrying two Russian astronauts Alexei Ovchinin and Ivan Vagner, and American astronaut Donald (Don) Pettit, landed near the town of Zhezkazgan, Kazakhstan.
Astronauts have spent 220 days on the ISS (since last September), making 3,520 flights around the Earth with a total distance of more than 150 million km.
NASA said astronauts spent time on the ISS researching important areas such as water purification technology, plant growth in a variety of conditions and the properties of fire in microgravity.
For astronaut Pettit, this is the fourth flight in his 29-year career. In total, he has lived and worked in orbit for more than 18 months.
Notably, this return trip took place on his 70th birthday - a special milestone marked not by a cake or gifts, but by the journey back from space after more than 7 months working on the ISS.
Space is one of the remaining areas of cooperation between the US and Russia in the context of relations between Moscow and Washington almost frozen due to the conflict in Ukraine./.
