On the morning of May 31, the Hollywood Reporter reported that Taylor Swift officially bought back all copyrights to her first six albums in a deal with investment fund Shamrock Capital.
This event marks the reunion between the singer and the products associated with her name, six years after the controversial copyright sale to Scooter Braun's Ithaca Holdings company.
A bitter journey
On the evening of May 30 (Vietnam time), Taylor Swift uploaded an emotional letter to her fans on her website to share this important news. However, the financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
"I'm trying to organize my thoughts into something coherent, but my mind is just a rewind reel. I've dreamed, waited, and yearned for the opportunity to share this news with you.
I have cried tears of joy many times since I found out that this has actually come true. I can truly say these words: All the music I have ever created... now belongs to me" - the singer wrote.

The announcement ends a year-long feud between Swift and Scooter Braun, who bought Big Machine Records in 2019 and now owns the masters of Swift's early albums. Notably, the Lover singer was not given any notice at the time and had no chance to buy back her work.
The singer called the deal "the worst possible scenario," and revealed that she had repeatedly asked Big Machine boss Scott Borchetta to buy back the master recordings.
However, she was only given the option to "renew her contract and have to 'earn back' each album one by one, each time she submitted a new one."
"I knew about Scooter Braun buying my masters when the world found out. The only thing I could think about was the years of being manipulated and bullied by this man. He took away my life's work that I never had a chance to keep" - Taylor Swift shared in an interview.

In 2020, Scooter Braun sold Swift's music catalog to Shamrock Capital for approximately $300 million. In the letter, she expressed her endless gratitude to Shamrock Capital for making the deal happen.
“For them, this is a business deal,” she asserted. “But I really feel that they understand what it means to me: my memories, my sweat, my handwriting, my decades-long dreams.”
Taylor Swift struggles to regain her lost 'child'
According to the Hollywood Reporter , after the incident, Taylor Swift decided to re-record all the albums she lost control of to regain ownership.
She released "Taylor's Version" versions of her albums Fearless, Red, Speak Now , and 1989. Of these, 1989 (Taylor's Version) surpassed the original in first-week sales and became one of the best-selling albums of the year.
As for Taylor Swift's debut album, the singer confirmed that she has completed re-recording, while her album Reputation is only a quarter complete.

Since 2019's Lover , all of Swift's new releases have been released through Universal Music Group's Republic Records, and she fully owns the original copyrights.
Taylor Swift also said she feels comforted to see discussions about master recording ownership rekindled in the music industry.
Every time she hears a young artist share that they have successfully negotiated to own their records from the very first contract, the female singer realizes that everything she has experienced, no matter how bitter and difficult, is not meaningless.

"Thank you for taking an interest in something that was once considered too 'industry specific' to be brought to public attention. You will never know how much it means to me.
Every little bit of your concern has contributed to bringing us to this day. Thanks to your support, sharing and belief, the best things that used to belong to me… are now truly mine" - the female singer sent her thanks to her fans.
