(NB&CL) Tet, the Lunar New Year, is a time for people to temporarily set aside work and the worries of life, giving those who live far from home the opportunity to return and reunite with their families and loved ones, and together welcome the good fortune of the new year. This is a very meaningful tradition, a beautiful cultural aspect that will forever be passed down in Vietnam.
Typically, towards the end of the year, YouTube channels, television music programs, and social media platforms feature numerous Tet (Lunar New Year) music videos, diverse in themes and rich in form. Many of these videos are meaningful and touching, conveying the message: "No matter how busy you are, you should still take time to return home and reunite with your family after a busy year of work. Because Tet is a time for togetherness and reunion," such as: "Tet is about reunion," "Come home early for Tet," "Spring reunion," "Our family's Tet," etc.
I remember the day I left my hometown for the city to study at university for the first time. At the bus station, my father told me, "Come home early for Tet, my child." And so, every year, as Tet approaches, I long to return home to reunite with my family and enjoy the joyful and bustling atmosphere of the Tet celebration.
It's not just me, but everyone feels the same way. Every time spring arrives and Tet (Lunar New Year) comes, those born and raised in the countryside, or with roots there, eagerly look forward to returning to their ancestral homeland. Being with mother, father, and loved ones, gathered together in the warm sunshine of spring, surrounded by blooming flowers, is a time to inquire about each other's health, share stories of the past year, and reflect on the past, cherishing what has passed and looking forward to the future. This has become a long-standing tradition and a beautiful cultural aspect of the Vietnamese people throughout all regions.
From ancient times to the present day, and certainly into the future, the meaning of Tet, the reunion and gathering of family, remains intact in the hearts of Vietnamese people living and working everywhere. No matter how crowded, cramped, and arduous the train, plane, or car journeys during Tet may be; no matter how far the distance, thousands of kilometers; or even in some distant country in the world , thousands of miles away, the children of Vietnam always have a dream of "spring": to return to their homeland, to reunite with their dearest loved ones, to celebrate Tet – a spring filled with many new and wonderful things awaiting them.
No matter how much worry and hardship the past year has brought, everyone longs to return home to reunite with their family during Tet (Lunar New Year). Celebrating Tet away from home, even with material comforts, the absence of loved ones can be incredibly sad and lonely. Children eagerly anticipate the holiday, hoping to go out, buy new clothes, visit their grandparents in the countryside, or enjoy a relaxing vacation . Adults are busy preparing gifts for their parents, grandparents, and relatives, as well as buying new items to decorate their homes.
Throughout the country, from mountainous regions and rural areas to cities, every home is bustling and vibrant, filled with the festive atmosphere of Tet. For Vietnamese people, the moments when the whole family gathers around the dinner table on the last evening of the year, chatting together around the pot of banh tet (traditional rice cake), and eagerly awaiting the New Year's Eve countdown are sacred and most anticipated moments.
As life becomes more modern, people often say that Tet (Vietnamese New Year) is becoming "dull," no longer as joyful as it used to be. But they don't realize that simply having all family members together on the last day of the year, healthy and strong, preparing a farewell meal to offer to ancestors, and chatting about the past year – that's already a complete and joyful Tet celebration. Where else could you find such happiness?
And for those who live far from home, there's nothing happier than returning to the warmth of family during Tet. Leaving to return, because Tet only comes once a year. Cherish your family while you still can, because it's the warmest place in the world, always open and waiting for you to return, no matter who you are. However, in modern life, more and more Vietnamese people are leaving their birthplace to study, earn a living, or pursue careers elsewhere; sometimes even beyond national borders. Therefore, "returning home for Tet" has become a nostalgic memory, or just a "spring dream" for many Vietnamese living abroad.
In recent years, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic, in the face of difficult circumstances, the "Spring Journey - Tet Reunion" programs have been implemented by many localities, levels, sectors, businesses, and philanthropists to provide gifts and transportation to help workers, students, and laborers in difficult circumstances celebrate Tet and enjoy a warm spring with their families, contributing to bringing moments of love and connection during the Tet holiday.
“I’m home to my parents! Thank you, the Tet Reunion Bus, for bringing my family a complete and joyful Tet holiday,” shared a student studying in a southern city last year, upon returning to her hometown in a northern province during the Tet holiday of the Year of the Dragon. Happiness and emotion were the feelings shared by poor workers and students who were fortunate enough to receive tickets for the Tet Reunion Bus to return home for the Tet holiday.
Recently, with the rapid development of information technology and the unlimited spread of social media, Vietnamese people living abroad have more opportunities and means to celebrate Tet (Lunar New Year) with their families, not only connecting through words, but also through vivid and authentic images via live streams to send each other greetings and well wishes. This could be the Tet reunion of the 4.0 and 5.0 technological revolution era!
The old year of the Dragon is coming to an end, and a new spring of the Snake, full of joy and hope, is approaching. Even with the development of life, Tet (Vietnamese New Year) for every Vietnamese family remains a time of reunion and togetherness, a tradition passed down through generations in every family meal. As the lyrics of the song "Sweet Dream" by musician Hoai An say: "Our family's Tet has always been the same/The warm and familiar taste of family, " or "Welcoming spring with apricot and peach blossoms in the yard/Feeling the spring fragrance intoxicating/Welcoming you home to the family at the end of the year/Happiness overflows with words/Let's celebrate this moment together/Laughing and talking under the roof/What gift could be more joyful than a family reunion/What Tet could be more joyful than a reunion Tet…" express this, as well as the meaning of the joy of Tet reunion and togetherness. The atmosphere of welcoming the new spring is bustling and spreading everywhere. May everyone and every family be reunited, because a complete and joyful Tet reunion is what makes for a truly happy Tet…
