The Tay people have a fairly developed traditional agriculture with a variety of crops such as rice, corn, potatoes and seasonal vegetables.

Large villages are divided into many small hamlets. There are stilt houses, earthen houses, and some border areas have defensive houses.
In the house, the men's room is outside and the women's room is inside. The Tay people often wear indigo-dyed cotton clothes. Women's shirts are calf-length, have narrow sleeves, are split at the right armpit, and have five buttons.
