In the first six months of 2025, Thailand had 279 foreign film projects filmed and produced in the country, generating an estimated 2.87 billion baht in revenue. Meanwhile, the projected revenue from these films for the entire year of 2025 is expected to reach 10 billion baht, exceeding the initial target of 7.5 billion baht. India, South Korea, Japan, and China are the countries with the most film co-production projects in Thailand in 2025, followed by investors from the US and the online platform Netflix.
Thailand's appeal for investment and film production stems from its innovative policies supporting film development in recent years. Thailand has a clear vision to become a leading film destination in Asia. Therefore, for many years, the country has continuously implemented policies and mechanisms to support film production. Specifically, Thailand has implemented a program that reimburses foreign film crews 15-30% of their filming costs. This incentive program plays a crucial role in attracting large-budget films and bringing major producers to Thailand. This is why Thailand has been chosen as the production location for a new installment of "Jurassic World" or "The White Lotus" in 2025.
Furthermore, Thailand is also creating favorable conditions to attract talent and invest in filmmaking human resources. Specifically, the Thai Television Screenwriters Association (TSA) has implemented strategies to enhance creative capabilities and help Thai films find a foothold in the global market. The TSA organizes script projects to select scripts for film production. Approximately 279 scripts were submitted to the TSA, and 30 works by young writers were selected for development into actual projects. Mr. Khathahat Busaphaket, President of the TSA, stated that these projects focus on improving screenwriting skills while building a sustainable ecosystem for the industry. High-quality scripts are selected, and clear production and distribution mechanisms are in place, gradually improving the quality of Thai films and enabling them to better access international markets.
Producer Chang Shin Ae believes that to attract investors, scripts must have fresh, impressive content and capture current market trends well. Therefore, projects from the TSA (Thai State Administration of Radio, Film and Television) have provided opportunities for screenwriters to proactively create, producing products with unique identities while also catering to global tastes. As a result, Thailand has gradually produced many films that have made a mark on the international market, such as "Master of House" (pictured) and "The Paradise of Thorns." "Master of House" holds the top position on Netflix's global non-English language film rankings and is also in the Top 10 in 63 countries worldwide .
Furthermore, Thailand is also making efforts to build more film events to attract investors. Specifically, Pattaya has signed memoranda of understanding with 12 international film organizations to support Pattaya in becoming a center of the film industry in Thailand. In the Pattaya City Development Plan 2022-2027, Pattaya will be a one-stop service center for the film and creative industries. Specifically, a 640,000m2 film studio will be built to serve the film industry, and local educational institutions will enhance their teaching and training programs to support the film industry. Simultaneously, the Pattaya Film Festival, held since 2023, has gradually become an event attracting many international film studios, production companies, directors, and actors.
