The study led by Dr. Maria Morales-Suarez-Valera from the University of Valencia and the Carlos III Health Institute (Spain) suggests that regular fish consumption has a significant impact on the risk of developing depression.

According to the article published in the scientific journal Nutrients, they studied 11,485 students from 11 different universities across Spain over a period of 10 years. The World Health Organization (WHO) said that up to 1 in 5 university students have experienced severe depression, so scientists chose this group for research.
67% of the students met the recommendation for fish intake; the rest ate little or none at all.
The results showed that the group that did not eat fish at all had a 31% higher risk of depression. This benefit may come from omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D, which are abundant in fish.
There have been studies showing that some fish-eating communities, such as coastal Asian countries or the Mediterranean, are communities with high levels of happiness.
Of course, the development of depression is driven by many different factors, but something as simple as a familiar, easily accessible food is a crucial finding; it provides an easy, low-cost way to reduce the risk.
Researchers also emphasize the vitamin D factor. Although abundant in fish and other seafood, most vitamin D can be synthesized from sunlight. Getting outside more and exercising in the sunlight is also a good suggestion if you feel moody.
