"Anxious" about landslides

Over the past 10 years, riverbank and canal erosion in Nhon My commune, Can Tho city, has occurred frequently, causing rural roads to collapse and "swallowing" many houses along the rivers, canals, and streams. This situation directly affects the daily lives and activities of the people.

Mr. Pham Van My, from Phung An hamlet, Nhon My commune, shared: "I have lived in this area for decades. For the past five years, I've seen landslides becoming increasingly serious. I hope that all levels of government and relevant agencies will implement effective measures to support the locality in preventing and controlling landslides, so that people can feel safe when traveling on the roads and engaging in agricultural production."

On April 24th, two landslides occurred in An Phu Dong and Phu Tay hamlets, measuring 30m and 25m in length respectively, and extending 10m inland. The landslides damaged a rural road and put one house at risk of collapsing into the river.

Riverbank erosion in Phung An hamlet, Nhon My commune, has damaged rural roads and people's homes.

Mr. Nguyen Van Son, residing in An Phu Dong hamlet, shared: “Recently, landslides have not only occurred in riverside areas but have also caused subsidence on rural roads, making us very worried. Recently, in my neighborhood, a nearly 30-meter stretch of rural road collapsed, luckily without causing any casualties. I hope the authorities will review and forecast landslide trends so that people can be aware and take timely preventive measures.”

According to Mr. Nguyen Nhut Truong, Head of the Economic Department of Nhon My commune, the landslide situation in the commune is quite complex, with the extent of damage increasing. Many properties and houses of the people have been affected; many main roads in the commune have been completely cut off. The main cause is the impact of water flow causing erosion, creating cavities, leading to landslides. To date, there are 70 landslide sections in the commune, with a total length of more than 1,265m, including 6 main roads that have been cut off, and 9 houses that have been affected and completely swept away. The hamlets most frequently affected are An Phu Dong; Phung An 1; Phung An and Truong Tho hamlets.

In response to this situation, the commune proactively mobilized its rapid response force, police, military , local security forces, and the people's committees of each hamlet to assist residents in dismantling houses and moving belongings to safe locations. Simultaneously, they implemented temporary solutions to address landslides, such as reinforcing coconut and mangrove piles; organizing campaigns to encourage residents to allow temporary access routes; and installing warning signs in high-risk landslide areas to ensure the safety of vehicles. To date, the commune has temporarily reinforced and repaired 27 landslide sections, totaling over 530 meters, at a cost of approximately 2 billion VND.

Mr. Cao Minh Thom, Chairman of the People's Committee of Nhon My commune, informed: Currently, there are still 43 critical landslide sections in the commune, with a total length of approximately 760m, that have not yet been repaired, with an estimated cost of about 6.2 billion VND. Through on-site inspection, many sections of deep landslides in the commune cannot be reinforced with soft embankments and require the construction of hard embankments for long-term protection. We request that the People's Committee of Can Tho City and relevant departments and agencies consider and promptly declare a state of emergency for the landslide section in Phung An hamlet and allocate funds for the construction of hard embankments at critical points, repairing vital roads and ensuring safe travel for residents.
