Seeing a 10kg toothed turtle facing extinction on the dike, police handed it over to forest rangers

During a night patrol, the police of Vam Co commune, Tay Ninh discovered a 10km-toothed turtle, a critically endangered animal species facing the risk of extinction in the wild.

On October 6, information from Long An Provincial Police said that Vam Co Commune Police had just handed over a live toothed turtle, weighing about 10kg, to forest rangers to receive, care for and release into the natural environment according to regulations.

The toothed turtle is a large turtle species, with the scientific name Heosemys annandalii, also known as the mangrove turtle, living in some regions of Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, ...

This animal is classified as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), facing the risk of extinction in the wild. The Vietnam Red Book classifies this species in group IIB.

Previously, during a night patrol, the police of Vam Co commune discovered this toothed turtle crawling on the dike of the Vam Co Dong river, so they confiscated it and brought it in for preservation.

Mobile Ranger Team No. 2, Tay Ninh Provincial Forest Protection Department has handed over and continued to care for, finding suitable conditions to release back into the wild to protect this rare turtle.
