Martinez caused difficulties for Manchester United in their 1-2 defeat to Leeds United. During a challenge with Leeds striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Martinez grabbed Calvert-Lewin's hair, forcing the referee to issue a direct red card to the defender.

According to the regulations, Martinez will receive a three-match suspension, meaning he will miss crucial matches against Chelsea, Brentford, and Liverpool.

Speaking on television, former Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher argued that the decision was too harsh. "He was heading for the ball and almost struggling to gain an advantage. Martinez was trying to grab onto something and accidentally touched the back of his opponent's head. Maybe hair or something," the former Liverpool defender analyzed.

Carragher then argued that any fan, coach, or player looking at the situation would not consider it a red card. This viewpoint quickly gained widespread support from experts and fans alike.

Calvert-Lewin also spoke out after the match: "I didn't make the rules. I felt my hair being pulled and immediately told the referee, and then he made the decision. Unfortunately, whether Martinez did it intentionally or not, I have no ill feelings towards him."

Manchester United lost 1-2 but still retained third place in the Premier League table, missing the opportunity to increase their lead over the chasing pack.

Manchester United's return to the Champions League is drawing near, with their rivals consistently suffering unfavorable results in Round 32 of the 2025/26 Premier League. Red Devils fans understand that their team holds the power to decide everything.
