Geoffrey Katatsya, a coffee trader in the town of Ibanda, expects prices to rise further in the coming weeks due to demand and the quality of the beans. The robusta harvest season began in mid-April and is expected to end in the second half of July.
Meanwhile, Arabica coffee beans fell, trading at Sh9,000/kg from Sh9,500/kg previously.
Mr Katatsya attributed the decline to low-quality coffee beans as the arabica harvest season has ended. “Currently, the coffee beans coming to the market are small in size and of poor quality, with low yields,” he said.
The next arabica coffee harvest season begins in September, according to New Vision .
