Vinh Tan 2 Thermal Power Plant has 600,000 tons of coal, but other EVN plants lack about 1 million tons for electricity production in June and July.
The information was stated at a meeting between Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) and Dong Bac Corporation on the coal supply situation in June and July, on June 12. The meeting took place in the context of the North being in a state of power shortage, with power cuts in many localities.
EVN said that according to the updated plan for mobilized output in June and July, coal demand for electricity production of thermal power plants in the North will remain high.
Specifically, the expected output mobilized from EVN's anthracite coal-fired thermal power plants in these two months is about 12.33 billion kWh, corresponding to the coal demand of 6.03 million tons.

However, the volume under the contract signed with TKV and Dong Bac Corporation is 4.38 million tons, still short of 1.64 million tons compared to the plan. Of which, Vinh Tan 2 Thermal Power Plant (Generation Corporation 3, Genco 3) proactively supplemented 600,000 tons. Thus, the remaining coal shortage for electricity in the two months is about 1 million tons for the remaining factories of EVN, allocating 600,000 tons in June and 400,000 tons in July.
EVN General Director Tran Dinh Nhan acknowledged that the hot weather will continue to last in the North, along with unfavorable hydrological conditions, so it is expected that thermal power plants (coal, oil, gas) will be highly mobilized.
To ensure coal for power generation during the remaining peak of this year's dry season, EVN requested Dong Bac Corporation to supply coal according to the signed contract (4.38 million tons), and to compensate for the missing coal volume according to the contract in June. The Group also proposed Dong Bac Corporation to provide the full amount of coal as committed between the parties, especially in June and July.
Faced with difficulties in the electricity supply situation, Colonel Do Manh Kham, General Director of Dong Bac Corporation, said that the unit will implement solutions to ensure fuel supply for EVN, especially in the remaining months of the dry season in 2023.
EVN also proposed to seek solutions to supplement the amount of coal supplied to electricity according to the mobilization needs of the system in the coming months, in which coal supplied to other consumers is reduced to increase the amount of coal supplied to electricity production. Coal compensation will be implemented in the last months of the year.
In May, Dong Bac Corporation supplied 687,560 tons of coal to EVN factories, not including the 5% increase in volume according to the working minutes between the corporations on May 9. Since the beginning of June, Dong Bac Corporation has supplied 147,000 tons, equal to 21.4% of the contract volume.
Hydropower - one of the two main sources of electricity supply for the North is decreasing in mobilization due to drought and dry hydropower reservoirs. According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade , many hydropower plants have had to stop generating electricity, of which 5 plants in the North have had to stop: Son La, Lai Chau, Huoi Quang, Thac Ba, Tuyen Quang. This is the reason for the shortage of electricity capacity for the North of about 5,000 MW.
Meanwhile, some thermal power plants encountered problems when mobilized at high levels, also affecting power generation.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade said the North will lack 30.9-50.8 million kWh per day, and there is a risk of power shortages at most hours of the day. The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting predicts that hydroelectric reservoirs will still be "thirsty" for water in the next 10 days when the water flow to the reservoirs is very low.
