“Seeing pork in the store is too expensive, some are up to 300,000 VND/kg, I drove to the market to buy it but the price is just as high,” Ms. Dinh Thi Dieu in Hoang Mai ( Hanoi ) complained.

Ms. Dieu confided that in recent years, her family's income has decreased quite a bit. To balance living expenses, she often invites a few people to buy pork to freeze for later consumption. Therefore, she only goes to the market or store to buy pork a few times a month.

On this occasion, work was busy, the meat in the freezer was also gone. She went to the convenience store right below her apartment building to buy a few types of meat to last the rest of the week. Looking at the price of pork there, she felt dizzy because everything was expensive. Pork belly with ribs cost 280,000 VND/kg, baby back ribs cost up to 300,000 VND/kg, or ground meat also cost 150,000 VND/kg.

Feeling sorry for the money, Ms. Dieu ran to the market again. However, the price of pork at the market was not much cheaper. The vendors said that pork had been expensive for the past month. In the end, she had to buy 1kg of pork belly for 160,000 VND, and ground pork for 140,000 VND/kg.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Van in Thanh Tri (Hanoi) admitted, Pork prices increase sharply So the pork dishes that she cooks and sells to customers also increase from 10,000-15,000 VND/serving.

Accordingly, stuffed beans with tomato sauce cost 70,000 VND/serving; grilled meats, rolled in lolot leaves cost 90,000 VND/serving; frozen meat costs 100,000 VND/serving... This price has been applied for nearly a month now, Ms. Van said.

Recorded at traditional markets, the price of pork belly ranges from 140,000-160,000 VND/kg, spare ribs from 150,000-180,000 VND/kg, lean shoulder, rump, and ham hock cost 130,000-140,000 VND/kg,... Compared to the beginning of this year, the price has increased by 20-30%.

“The price increase and staying high makes it harder to sell pork, even making it a bit sluggish,” said Ms. Phung Thi Thuy, a pork trader in Ha Dong (Hanoi). Previously, the price of pork fluctuated from 100,000-130,000 VND/kg, and in one day she could sell a pig with a jaw weighing less than 100 kg. But now she only imports 2/3 of the pig and many days it still remains unsold, unable to sell all.

On the website of Vissan - a large pork business and distribution unit in our country, VietGAP skinless pork belly is listed at 210,000 VND/kg, ribless pork belly at 280,000 VND/kg, baby back ribs at 300,000 VND/kg, ribs at 200,000 VND/kg, lean thigh at 165,000 VND/kg, ground lean meat at 150,000 VND/kg...

According to a report from Hoc Mon wholesale market, on July 8, pork prices ranged from 115,000-140,000 VND/kg depending on the type. The reason was a decrease in supply, pushing up the price of live pigs.

Mr. Nguyen Tri Cong - Chairman of Dong Nai Livestock Association, informed that preliminary survey results of small-scale livestock households and large enterprises showed that the pig herd decreased by 30-40%, in some places it decreased by up to 70%.

Last year, the price of live pigs dropped sharply and remained at a very low level, causing farmers to suffer heavy losses for a long time. This time, African swine fever is raging in many localities, and farmers are worried and do not dare to restock.

Therefore, the supply to the market has decreased significantly, pushing up the price of pork despite the market being in the lowest consumption season of the year.

A representative of the Mega Market supermarket chain also said that compared to the same period last year, pork prices increased by more than 20% because the price of live pigs increased by 27% since last month.

According to this representative, the high price of pork is mainly due to the impact of African swine fever, causing some small-scale farmers to stop restocking. However, the supermarket chain has 2 pork transit stations in Hanoi and Dong Nai, buying directly from farmers, so it still ensures a stable supply, and the price does not fluctuate too much.

Currently, the market price of live pigs is around 62,000-69,000 VND/kg. In which, the Northern region has the highest price, commonly from 67,000-69,000 VND/kg.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development forecasts that the supply of live pigs will increase again in the near future. However, due to the complicated developments of African swine fever, pork prices may remain high and only decrease again in 2025.
