US-China TikTok deal: ByteDance keeps 1 of 7 board seats

International media reported on September 20 that the US and China are expected to reach an agreement on the board structure and how the platform will operate in the US.

“The board that oversees the app's operations in the United States will have seven seats, and six of those seats will be held by Americans,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told Fox News.

Previously, Reuters news agency quoted an anonymous White House official as also revealing that parent company ByteDance has the right to choose one of seven seats on TikTok's board of directors in the US.

American members of TikTok’s board will need national security and cybersecurity clearances, according to another White House official. The remaining board member, chosen by ByteDance, will not be on the security committee.

In addition, Ms. Leavitt said that TikTok US's data and privacy will be handled by Oracle - one of the leading technology companies in the US owned by billionaire Larry Ellison.

Oracle will act as TikTok's security services provider and safety monitor, a source familiar with the matter told Bloomberg.

The company will work with the US government to store US user data in the US. China will not have access to this data source.

“The algorithm will also be controlled by the US. All these details have been agreed. Now we just need to sign this agreement. I expect this will happen in the next few days,” she added.

The progress in this agreement marks a rare breakthrough after months of negotiations between the US and China, contributing to easing the wide-ranging trade war between the world's two leading economies .

In an interview with the media on September 20, President Donald Trump said that the US has big figures who are buying and managing the TikTok application. However, the US leader refused to reveal the identities of the seven figures on the TikTok US board of directors.

According to AFP news agency, Mr. Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping discussed this agreement in a phone call on September 19.

Mr Trump later said Mr Xi had “approved” the deal. However, TikTok and the Chinese government have not yet commented on the deal.
