Thomas Mueller will leave Bayern Munich in the summer of 2025 - ending a memorable "relationship" that has lasted for 25 years.

"Today is clearly not a normal day for me. My 25 years as a player at FC Bayern will come to an end this summer," Thomas Mueller told Bayern's website.

"It has been an amazing journey, marked by special experiences, precious relationships and unforgettable titles."

"I am incredibly grateful and happy to have dedicated my career to the club I love. The special bond I have with the club, along with our wonderful fans, will last forever."

"We will be going all out in the coming weeks to bring the Bundesliga trophy back to Munich and reach the long-awaited Champions League final on home soil. Let's do it together!"

Along with the sharing on the homepage, in an emotional message posted on his personal Instagram account, Muller talked about his decision.

"After a lot of speculation about me over the past few months, I would like to provide a clear explanation of the situation. After all these years, I still enjoy playing for the team and fighting for the national team and the trophies. I can still see myself doing that next season," the 35-year-old said.

Mueller said he wanted to stay with the team longer but that did not happen when Bayern Munich decided not to renew his contract.

"The club decided not to negotiate a new contract with me for next season. I hoped for a different decision, but I respect this step, which certainly was not easy for the board and management."

Reaction to Mueller's decision to part ways

Bayern president Herbert Hainer believes Thomas Mueller is the symbol of a fairytale career with a Bavarian streak - he grew up in Bavaria and shone with Bayern.

“From Ammersee to the Allianz Arena, then as far as Asia and America. No one has won more Bundesliga titles than him – 33 trophies to date speak for themselves. Thomas belongs among the greatest figures in FC Bayern history.”

Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen said: "The key is that we have found a solution that both parties can agree on. Thomas Müller is one of the most outstanding personalities the club has ever had, so reaching a fair and amicable agreement was our top priority. Now our aim is to work together to close this extraordinary career with three more trophies."

“This decision was obviously not an easy one for us. The final decision was a matter of squad planning, as we look to the future. The discussions with Thomas were frank and transparent on both sides. Thomas knows that he is valued at FC Bayern, and this decision does not change that. We now want to win more trophies with him,” said Max Eberl, member of the Bayern Sports Council.

Meanwhile, Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund affirmed: "There will never be anyone like him again, that's for sure, and he has been imbued with the FC Bayern spirit since he was very young. This decision was extremely difficult, as anyone can understand. Now, we will do everything to close this journey with titles."

The numbers that made Thomas Mueller's legendary career

Thomas Mueller officially joined Bayern Munich in 2000 from TSV Pähl at the age of 10. He was then promoted to the first team in 2008 and made his debut in August 2008.
