The Pediatric Center and the Poison Control Center are working with neurologists to carefully evaluate the EEG and consider treating some children at risk of seizures. If they do not have any, they can still be discharged. Children with brain damage will have another MRI scan of the brain on the 28th or 29th of the lunar calendar. If they are stable, they can be transferred to another hospital or discharged with a prescription and a follow-up appointment,” the doctors said.
Previously, on the evening of January 22, the Pediatric Center and the Poison Control Center, Bach Mai Hospital received 32 pediatric patients, most of whom were students from grades 1 to 5 at Phu Binh Primary School, Tuyen Quang City, who had mistakenly ingested fluoroacetate rat poison. On January 23, the Poison Control Center continued to receive 2 more pediatric patients, bringing the total number of pediatric patients who drank “red syrup” to kill rats treated at Bach Mai Hospital to 34.
Dr. Nguyen Trung Nguyen - Director of the Poison Control Center said: With the characteristics of the red liquid tube, the symptoms of the children and the toxicology test results, it is clear that this is a case of poisoning with fluoroacetate/fluoroacetamide rat poison. In addition, we are very careful to monitor and evaluate whether there are other substances causing poisoning at the same time because the first child who discovered the bag containing rat poison also had a blue tube.
Fluoroacetate/fluoroacetamide is a rat poison originating from China, usually in the form of: Small plastic or glass tubes containing pink solution, colorless solution, brown solution, or pink rice packets, all without labels or completely in Chinese.
This is a highly toxic rat poison that can cause seizures, coma, severe brain damage, heart damage, acute myocarditis, acute heart failure, arrhythmia, cardiogenic shock, with hypocalcemia being the typical symptom. Severe poisoning can cause multiple organ damage and failure.
