Achieved SAT score of 1590, IELTS score of 8.5 on the first try

Van Ha is an excellent student at Nguyen Trai High School for the Gifted, Hai Duong. She won the Encouragement Prize in the National Excellent Student English Competition in grade 11, and the Third Prize in the National Excellent Student English Competition in grade 12. Throughout her high school years, the female student was always classified as an excellent student with an average score of 9.0, of which she achieved 9.4 points in grade 12.

Talking to reporters of the People's Representative Newspaper , Van Ha confided that she realized she had a talent and passion for English since she was a child. This love came to her very naturally. "I find that there are many good things in learning foreign languages. When I read interesting ways of using words or good expressions, I always feel very surprised and want to learn more," Van Ha said.

Van Ha took the IELTS test before grade 12 and the SAT test at the end of grade 12. On her first attempt, she achieved very impressive results: SAT score 1590 (790 Reading and Writing, 800 Math) and IELTS 8.5 (9.0 Listening, 9.0 Reading, 7.0 Writing, 8.0 Speaking).

According to the female student, she only started studying IELTS intensively 2 months before. However, she also had basic knowledge from 2 years of studying English at school. With listening and reading skills, in addition to doing IELTS exercises, Ha also watches movies, watches YouTube and reads books, searches for information in English to practice reflexes. During practice, she often increases the speed of the listening test to prepare mentally when the test is difficult.

Regarding writing skills, Van Ha practices writing regularly. After each writing session, she will read it many times to gain experience, combined with referring to sample essays, thereby perfecting her work. She aims for a coherent, clear, and concise writing style instead of writing too long or flowery.

In speaking skills, there will be some important topics, Van Ha often outlines each topic and develops her speech according to these ideas. Besides, according to the female student, an indispensable part of doing the IELTS speaking test is confidence, fluency and naturalness. Mastering a diverse vocabulary and grammar is also essential to achieve high scores in all IELTS skills.

For the SAT, Van Ha studied quite hastily, but because of that, she focused more. “At first, I planned to focus all my attention on my high school graduation exam score to apply to the business school, but the results of some practice tests were not as expected. Therefore, I decided to study for the SAT, in parallel with studying for the graduation exam,” Ha said.

Van Ha started with a practice test on the official SAT app to determine her current level and set reasonable goals for the English and Math sections. Realizing that the more difficult part of the SAT is English, because the vocabulary and grammar of the test are quite complex and highly academic, in addition to doing exercises in books and online documents, she studied this part quite a lot, especially vocabulary.

After each practice test, the female student lists the parts she gets wrong the most and focuses on reviewing those parts of knowledge. Regarding the Math test, Ha believes that the knowledge is not too complicated, if she does it carefully, she will achieve a pretty good score.

“My parents don't require me to be an excellent student.”

Van Ha was born and raised in Gia Loc town, Gia Loc district, Hai Duong. Her father is a businessman, and her mother is a primary school teacher. The student confided that her parents do not require her to be an excellent student or to "study day and night" for exams. Instead, her parents guide her to develop life skills, communicate confidently and put health first.

“At around 11 or 12 o’clock at night, if my room light is still on, my mother will remind me to go to bed. My parents always say that my achievements are not important, health is the most important. My parents also always respect my wishes and interests, as well as share with me all the joys and sorrows in studying. I think my family’s support is the greatest source of encouragement for me,” Van Ha said.

Having been admitted early to many universities, Van Ha said she decided to choose the National Economics University because the school has good teaching quality, modern facilities and a favorable environment for students to develop both knowledge and social skills.

Ha chose Business Analytics because it focuses on analytical, thinking and consulting skills, and has potential in the coming years. In addition, because the curriculum is almost entirely in English, the female student also has the opportunity to access updated materials and use the second language more often.

Knowing that she was one of the top students in the National Economics University, Van Ha was very happy and surprised. “During my high school years, I never thought I would have the opportunity to achieve this special title. I am extremely grateful for the help and support of my family and friends who have accompanied me,” the female student shared.

Besides the joy, the female student also has some concerns that she may not be able to maintain this form after 4 years of university. However, Ha said that this is not too much pressure, because she does not put much emphasis on achievements. But she will try her best to achieve the best results for herself.

Giving advice to candidates applying for university admission next year, Van Ha said that they should identify possible options for university admission and develop a plan early.

“Currently, schools apply many admission methods. I think if possible, you should not focus on just one path. Having different options will help increase your chances of being admitted to your favorite school,” Van Ha said.
