Early morning of July 16, Nguyen Quang Minh, grade 12 specialized in math 2, Bac Ninh High School for the Gifted, sat next to his mother to look up his 2025 high school graduation exam scores.
“When I saw my perfect scores in math, physics, and chemistry, I was very happy. These past few days, I have not thought or worried much but have spent more time for myself and my family,” Minh shared.
From the sadness of failing the excellent student team to the motivation to self-study
With a perfect score of 30/30 in group A00 (math, physics, chemistry), Minh is one of the 8 valedictorians nationwide in group A00 of this year's high school graduation exam.
Having loved mathematics since childhood, Minh attended Nguyen Cao Secondary School in secondary school and was once on the school’s gifted student team. However, in high school, he “misstepped” and was not selected for the gifted student team.
This failure made Minh sad, but only 2 weeks later he tried hard and started to find joy in studying again. At that time, his parents, friends and teachers were there to encourage him a lot.
“My parents told me to study hard because there are still many things ahead, including the university entrance exam. I should focus, my parents are here, always by my side,” Minh confided.
After that, Minh no longer focused on the excellent student exam but quietly prepared for a further goal. “I studied all subjects, spent time reviewing, doing exercises, correcting mistakes and practicing quick thinking. Each session, I usually studied each subject for an hour and then changed subjects, so as not to get bored and to stay alert and interested in studying,” Minh said.
Unlike many friends who choose to study in groups to share knowledge, Minh prefers to study on his own because he thinks that “studying in groups can easily lead to distraction and lack of concentration”. Minh chooses to study independently, seeking knowledge through books, online study groups, and videos of teachers and study groups on Facebook.
According to Minh, this is a pretty good way to learn because you can learn many new ways to solve problems and answer questions that you have not yet found the answer to.
“I usually don’t study late at night or wake up early. I only study for about 3-4 hours in the evening, focusing on the weak parts. I don’t set out a detailed plan, I just determine what I have to do and try to do it,” Minh said.
Dream of engineering, artificial intelligence
Minh said that math has been his passion since he was a child, especially algebra - where Minh "sees the results right after calculating". On the contrary, Minh is a bit worried about geometry because it is "a bit difficult to imagine" and requires a lot of drawing.
As for physics, Minh is interested because this subject "explains many phenomena in life such as electricity, clouds, rain or sound waves".
“Every time I solve a difficult problem, I feel very happy. It’s like a small achievement, which motivates me to continue studying. Sometimes when I get tired of studying, I take a break and then come back instead of pushing myself too hard,” Minh said.
Currently, Minh is still considering technical fields such as information technology and artificial intelligence (AI) - fields that he believes will have many applications in life.
“My brother is studying at Hanoi University of Science and Technology, majoring in information technology. I am also looking into it further, and may pursue that path if I find it suitable for my interests and abilities. I will need more time to decide,” Minh said.
Sharing more about his learning experience, Minh said that the important thing is to be persistent, self-disciplined, keep a cheerful spirit, and try to improve weak areas before mastering advanced knowledge. If you encounter difficulties, challenges, or boredom in studying, take a break and find the joy of studying again.
"You don't need to study too much, but you have to study the right way. Knowing where you went wrong and correcting it, and keeping a happy spirit throughout the exam preparation process - that will help you go a long way," Minh said.
Minh shared that outside of school hours, he likes to play sports, including shuttlecock, soccer or playing games - these are moments of relaxation, relieving pressure with friends. "Among athletes, I idolize Cristiano Ronaldo. I find him talented and very determined, never giving up, trying to overcome all challenges, a role model for young players. I support whichever club he plays for," Minh happily said.
