During the Vu Lan season, some artists took advantage of the opportunity to perform dozens of shows at various temples.
Le Thuy, Thanh Dien: If they have the strength, they'll go sing during the Vu Lan season.
Despite his poor health, artist Thanh Dien still occasionally accepts performances at temples during the Vu Lan festival. He says that singing during Vu Lan feels very different—solemn and extremely serious. The audience listens attentively, appreciating each song and excerpt that the artist performs. Because these performances are not purely for entertainment, but remind people of the gratitude owed to their parents and the filial piety of children.
Thanh Dien is a Buddhist, so he believes that singing at the temple is his duty to do good for the Dharma and a better life. He said that in the past, when his wife, artist Thanh Kim Hue, was alive, she sang more songs for the Vu Lan festival than he did, and she wrote many meaningful songs.
During the Vu Lan festival performances, he mostly performs his wife's old compositions, especially the song "Please Don't Make Mother Cry ."
"When I sing, I get choked up because of the meaningful lyrics and also because I miss my wife. The audience knows this song by Hue by heart, so when I sing it, they are also moved and teary-eyed," Thanh Dien said emotionally. He added that the older he gets, the more his feelings change as he sings during the Vu Lan festival. Each time he sings songs about motherly love, he feels a sense of reflection and remembrance of his parents. Now a father and grandfather, Thanh Dien hopes that his children and grandchildren will continue to uphold filial piety towards their parents and grandparents.

Artist Binh Tinh performed 20 shows during the Vu Lan season. Using royalties from her mother Bach Mai and her personal funds, she distributed approximately 150 gifts to impoverished artists during the Vu Lan season. - Photo: Provided by the artist.
Artist Le Thuy, returning from abroad, quickly accepted a performance during the Vu Lan season in Ca Mau on September 12th. For many years, Le Thuy has supported many temples in their charitable work, so there isn't a single Vu Lan season when she doesn't sing for the people.
For Le Thuy, the image of her hardworking mother making cakes and struggling with all sorts of jobs to raise her and her siblings is unforgettable. Therefore, for Le Thuy, singing songs praising the gratitude owed to parents and spreading filial piety to everyone is a meaningful task.

Le Thuy will sing at a Vu Lan festival at a temple in Ca Mau on September 12th.
Continuing the mother's love
Artist Binh Tinh recently held the fourth anniversary commemoration of her mother's death on September 9th. She used all of her mother Bach Mai's royalties, plus her own money, to distribute approximately 150 gift packages to impoverished and needy artists. Each package included 1 million VND in cash and essential supplies. Every year, Binh Tinh saves up and gives gifts to artists and the poor in two installments: during the Vu Lan festival and during Tet (Lunar New Year).
This year, during the Vu Lan festival, Binh Tinh performed at dozens of shows, sometimes visiting two or three temples in a single night. She said that having accepted invitations to sing at temples during the Vu Lan season, she couldn't afford to be late, even though each time she sang, she couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness seeing others happily wearing red roses while she, alone, had to wear a white rose.
"But I see this season as a time to reflect on my parents, as an opportunity to dedicate my merits to them. In the past, during the Vu Lan season, my mother and I used to sing together. The first year after my mother passed away, I didn't dare accept the invitation to sing Vu Lan songs. In recent years, I've started singing again, but I still avoid places where my mother used to sing with me because I'm afraid it will bring me back memories and pain!" - Binh Tinh said, her voice choked with emotion.
On the evening of September 9th, artist Que Tran, along with a philanthropist, organized a vegetarian cultural and entertainment program for the Vu Lan festival at her vegetarian restaurant. The program featured many famous artists such as Minh Vuong, Thanh Dien, Chi Tam, Phuong Loan, Kim Tieu Long, Le Tu, Ha Nhu, Vo Minh Lam, Minh Luan, and others.
Quế Trân stated that when singing during the Vu Lan festival, artists don't calculate the money; they sing with all their hearts and contribute to charity. The revenue from the program, along with additional contributions from renowned singer Minh Cảnh, Quế Trân, and other philanthropists and artists, will be used to support the Artists' Temple. On October 13th, she will organize another program to support poor and struggling artists, workers, and backstage staff.

Thanh Dien sang at Tuong Van Monastery.
This year, the White Orchid group, organized by artist Tô Châu, is performing more shows than last year during the Vu Lan festival.
White Orchid is a singing group founded by the late artist Ut Bach Lan with the aspiration of using her singing to help poor artists and those in need in society. Since her passing, To Chau and the other artists have carefully preserved the group, perhaps that's why many temples trust and invite them more often.
Tô Châu said that his group often visits poor temples in many provinces and cities, hoping that those in need can enjoy the singing of famous artists. In some temples, the artists are so poor that they don't receive a fee and even have to cover their own transportation and other expenses to be able to perform for the people.
The White Orchid series features performances by artists such as Dieu Hien, Thoai Mieu, To Chau, Linh Trung, and others, singing pieces like "Motherly Love," "Muc Lien - Thanh De, " etc.
