Thanks to their proactive approach to production, many households in Vinh Ha commune, Vinh Linh district, Quang Tri province have overcome difficulties and built effective economic development models. One such model is the ornamental pot casting business of Mr. Le Huu Hai in Truong Tien village, which generates an income of approximately 150 million VND per year and provides regular employment for 4 local workers.

According to Hai's account, due to difficult circumstances, he couldn't pursue his education. After graduating from high school, he worked various jobs to earn extra income and help his family make ends meet. Later, through a friend's recommendation, he went to Nghe An province to learn the craft of making ornamental flower pots. Around the end of 2019, after much research and learning, Hai returned to his hometown and started his workshop, making his first flower pots in his challenging entrepreneurial journey.
“In the early days, my hands and feet were still clumsy and unfamiliar, so the products I made weren't as good as I'd hoped, and the pot designs didn't meet customer needs. Undeterred, I spent time learning, researching, and honing my skills. Gradually, I was able to design and produce eye-catching models that suited market demands,” Hai confided.
Making a beautiful flower pot depends heavily on the skill and expertise of the craftsman, and most importantly, meticulous attention to detail. The materials for making the pots consist of a mixture of cement and construction sand. The pot casting process has six steps: assembling the mold, lubricating the inside of the mold, mixing the mortar, pouring the mortar into the mold, removing the inner core, and removing the outer shell. According to Mr. Hai's experience, a product brought to market must go through many stages, from selecting raw materials, casting the pot, to painting the pot.
Mr. Hai's facility currently produces about a dozen types of products in different sizes, priced from 200,000 to 500,000 VND. On average, his facility produces and sells 300-400 products of various types each month. Business is busiest from the 10th lunar month and the period leading up to Tet (Lunar New Year), when demand from ornamental flower growers increases. Although the workload doubles, Mr. Hai earns a considerable income. According to Mr. Hai's calculations, after deducting expenses, his family earns approximately 150 million VND annually from this model. This is considered a significant source of income in a mountainous commune in Vinh Linh district that still faces many difficulties.
Mr. Hai added: “Currently, there are only a few establishments in the district that make this type of pot, so the market is quite stable. The pots are made entirely by hand, very meticulously, so they are durable, sturdy, and reasonably priced, making them popular with many people. After using them for a while, most people have given positive feedback. In the future, I plan to invest in buying new molds with more beautiful and intricate patterns to produce ornamental pots that meet the increasingly high aesthetic standards of customers.”
In addition to increasing his family's income, Hai's workshop now provides employment for four workers each month, with an average daily wage of 300,000 VND. Vo Van Chau, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Vinh Ha commune, said: "Hai is a very active member of the association, diligent, hardworking, and eager to learn and explore, which has enabled him to establish a stable pottery workshop as it is today."
Given the challenging conditions of a mountainous commune, new models like this have contributed significantly to the transformation of the occupational structure and increased income for the people. If expanded in scale, Mr. Hai's production facility will certainly help create jobs for many local workers.”
