Stable income from artichoke

Artichokes is grown by people in Tan Ha Lam Ha commune and has stable output.

These days, the artichoke garden of Mr. Phung Van Minh (Van Khanh village) is entering the harvest season to send to the company in time. With an area of nearly 2 hectares, Mr. Minh chose to grow artichokes interspersed with other crops such as coffee and durian. Mr. Minh said that after traveling and researching, trying to explore and learn, he realized the potential of artichokes, suitable to bring back to his hometown to plant and care for.

After a period of experimental planting, he realized that the plant was suitable for the natural conditions here, and at the same time provided a stable source of income from this plant, so he became interested in the artichoke plant on the land where he lives. "High-tech fruit trees, vegetables, and flowers require high investment costs, but also have many potential risks; I chose to grow artichokes in a nested planting method. To help the artichokes grow smoothly and achieve high productivity, I invested in installing an automatic irrigation system. This helps save labor and maintain stable humidity for the plant, especially on hot, dry days," Minh shared.

According to Mr. Minh, his garden applies flexible methods that not only bring economic efficiency, increase income for farmers but also contribute to changing crop structure, developing agricultural economy in the direction of multi-tree, multi-branch, increasing income on land area, cultivated locally. Besides, this planting method helps him make the most of the land area. Thereby, the garden gives continuous harvest, bringing income while waiting for the main crop of perennial crops.

Entering harvest time, Mr. Minh's garden started harvesting artichoke leaves to process into extract - a medicinal herb with many health benefits. According to the actual growing household in Tan Ha Lam Ha commune, artichokes grown locally are suitable for the soil, grow and develop well, the average height is up to 1.2 m, are less susceptible to pests and diseases, and have the ability to retain soil moisture and prevent erosion very well. "The whole artichoke is fully utilized by boiling it with water, drinking it instead of tea or coffee, which has the effect of cooling the liver, diuretic, detoxifying the body, and reducing cholesterol in the blood. Fresh artichoke leaves and flowers are also used instead of green vegetables, and artichoke roots are soaked in rice wine, which helps improve health," said Mr. Bright.

Currently, his artichoke garden has a stable income thanks to finding outlets from a company in Da Lat. Growing artichokes not only increases income but also helps farmers open up opportunities for long-term cooperation with businesses in the agricultural and medicinal products industry. Mr. Minh said that on average, 1 hectare produces about 30 tons of leaves/month, after deducting expenses, the profit is about 50 million VND/month.

According to the People's Committee of Tan Ha Lam Ha commune, currently, the commune has developed more than 10 hectares of artichokes, thereby contributing to increasing the economic value of agriculture . In order to increase income for farming households, the locality has also implemented scientific and technical methods to propagate so that people understand and grasp the process so that when people plant, they will ensure the best possible yield. With favorable soil conditions, suitable for farmers' investment costs, the locality continues to mobilize and encourage people to convert ineffective crop areas to artichoke cultivation to improve income and life for people.
