Perspectives in modern life
In this era of rapid technological development, communication between people has become increasingly convenient through digital applications. With just a tap on a phone screen, messages can be sent instantly to the recipient. This convenience is gradually shaping the communication habits of many people, especially young people, as traditional methods such as handwritten letters are no longer preferred.
Instead of spending time writing letters, most young people choose messaging apps for quick communication. Nguyen Khanh Linh (21 years old, a student at the Diplomatic Academy of Hanoi) shared: “I’ve never written a letter to anyone. If I need to say something, I just text; it’s faster and more convenient. Handwritten letters aren’t as common as they used to be, so I rarely think about writing them.”

Sharing the same view, Nguyen Huy Nam (25 years old, Dong Da ward, Hanoi ) believes that writing handwritten letters requires patience and is no longer suitable for today's communication style. He added: "Writing a letter can take quite a lot of time, while texting only takes a few seconds for the recipient to read it. With today's busy lifestyle, I think most people will prioritize more flexible communication methods."
Furthermore, messaging on current digital platforms integrates many forms of expression such as images, emojis, voice recordings, and short videos, making communication more lively and diverse. Meanwhile, handwritten letters, relying solely on words and writing, offer fewer forms of expression, making it difficult to meet the need for rapid and continuous communication in the digital age.
This reality also reflects a general trend in society. According to the "We are social" and "Meltwater" reports on the digital market, by 2025, Vietnam will have approximately 79.8 million internet users, equivalent to 78.8% of the population. Of these, more than 90% regularly use messaging applications such as Messenger, Zalo, etc.
Globally, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) has also noted a continuous decline in postal volume over the past decade. The popularity of online communication platforms has contributed to changing the way people connect, and handwritten letters – a traditional method of communication – are gradually losing their place in modern life.

Although not as common as before, some young people still choose to write handwritten letters as a way to connect emotionally in a deeper and more lasting way.
Nguyen Phuong Anh (23 years old, Nghia Do ward, Hanoi), a content creator on digital platforms, said that she maintains the habit of writing handwritten letters in her daily life, stemming from a desire to preserve traditional values.

In your opinion, handwriting each letter allows the writer to slow down, think more carefully, and thus convey emotions more fully. Furthermore, the process of choosing paper and decorating the letter makes each letter special, bearing a distinct personal touch. Therefore, letter writing becomes a rare "moment of quiet" amidst the hectic pace of modern life.
Phuong Anh often writes letters to friends and family on special occasions, or simply when she wants to confide in them or offer encouragement. Sometimes, she also writes to herself to record her feelings and thoughts throughout different stages of her life. For her, each letter is not just a message but also an expression of her appreciation for the recipient.
In the context of handwritten letters becoming less popular, especially among young people, Phuong Anh believes that each form of communication has its own value. While online messaging facilitates easy and quick connection, handwritten letters allow writers to express their emotions more sincerely and meaningfully, contributing to the preservation of enduring values in spiritual life.
With the "slow living" trend making a comeback, writing letters by hand is also being chosen by many young people as a way to balance their lives.
