According to Khmer Times, the two dismissed officials are Major General Lor Sokha, Director of the Mondulkiri Provincial Police; and Brigadier General Hem Bonarel, Commander of the Mondulkiri Provincial Gendarmerie.

This decision was announced by two decrees issued on May 22nd. The decrees did not state the reason for the dismissal.

However, domestic media, citing reliable sources, reported that the two officials were dismissed for failures in cracking down on online fraud rings.

In a statement on May 23, Prime Minister Hun Manet praised local authorities and the National Police for recent crackdowns on online fraud networks, and called for continued strong action to completely eradicate this type of crime.

Speaking at a cabinet plenary session, Hun Manet said that while successive campaigns had achieved significant results, many challenges remained. He urged relevant agencies to maintain their efforts, emphasizing that this directly affects Cambodia's international reputation.

This directive comes as Cambodia is implementing its Law on Combating Technology-Based Fraud, which came into effect on April 7th.

This law specifies five categories of offenses: technology-based fraud; operating a fraudulent online center; recruiting or training fraudsters; collecting personal data for malicious purposes; and money laundering.

Those convicted under this law can face life imprisonment, confiscation of property, and fines of up to 1 billion riel (approximately $250,000 ).
