Bloomberg Television Network reported that Mr. Trudeau has been under pressure to resign from within the LP, in the context of recent opinion polls showing that the party will be defeated in the next election.
Speaking to the press, Prime Minister Trudeau affirmed that Canada needs a real choice in the next election and he realized that he could not be the best choice in that election.
Before announcing his resignation as leader of the LPP, Prime Minister Trudeau met with Governor General Mary Simon, in which he proposed suspending parliamentary sessions until March 24, which was approved.
According to Canadian media, suspending the National Assembly session will likely give the LP party more time to prepare a successor leader and not face the prospect of losing a confidence vote.
Prime Minister Trudeau defended his actions, saying they were necessary to break the legislative deadlock in the House of Commons, and expressed confidence that the Canadian government would survive the confidence vote when Parliament returns.
During the suspension of Parliament, the current government will remain in power, meaning Mr Trudeau will still be Prime Minister of Canada on Inauguration Day of US President-elect Donald Trump.
Mr. Trudeau, born in 1971, took office in November 2015 and was re-elected twice, becoming one of Canada's longest-serving prime ministers. However, his popularity has begun to decline over the past two years amid public anger over rising living costs and a housing shortage.
Opinion polls so far show that the Liberals will be defeated miserably by the main opposition Conservative Party in the next election, scheduled for October 2025, regardless of who is in charge.
Trudeau's decision will open the competition for the LP leadership - the figure will also be selected as the party's candidate to enter the race against his main rival, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, in the race for the prime minister's seat.
Currently, the Liberal Party has several faces considered potential candidates such as former Deputy Prime Minister Christia Freeland, former Central Bank Governor Mark Carney, former British Columbia Premier Christy Clark and several ministers in the current government.
