At the Vietnam-Estonia business forum during his visit to the country on June 6, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said he had just had talks with Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal, agreeing that the two sides will cooperate more deeply in science and technology , innovation, digital transformation, trade and investment.
"This is an area in which Estonia has strengths and Vietnam has demand," the Prime Minister said, calling on Vietnamese and Estonian businesses to connect with each other, cooperate in effective investment and business, bringing benefits to both sides.
Vietnam will be the gateway for Estonian businesses and investors to enter the Southeast Asian region with a population of 700 million and dynamic development. In return, Estonia will be the gateway for Vietnamese businesses to enter the Baltic and Northern Europe regions.
Estonia is a small country located in Northern Europe, on the Baltic Sea, and is one of the three Baltic countries along with Latvia and Lithuania. Their businesses have many advantages in areas such as innovation, information technology, digital transformation, digital economy, financial technology, artificial intelligence, smart logistics and digital seaports... These are also the areas that Vietnam prioritizes to attract investment.
The Prime Minister said the two sides will establish a working group to promote economic cooperation and support businesses and investors. The two sides also agreed to protect the legitimate rights and interests of businesses from both countries and always encourage businesses to explore and cooperate, especially in emerging areas such as digital transformation, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things.
Vietnam and Estonia established diplomatic relations in 1992. Estonia has actively supported Vietnam in signing the Vietnam – EU Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) and is one of the first EU countries to ratify the Vietnam – EU Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA).
Trade turnover between the two countries has increased steadily over the years, but will only reach 73.8 million USD by 2024. Estonia currently has 5 valid direct investment projects in Vietnam with a total investment capital of 280,000 USD.
At the discussion, Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna acknowledged that Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s visit would help bring the relationship between the two countries to a new level. He agreed with the view that promoting cooperation must be quick and time-saving.
According to the Minister, Vietnam is one of the fastest growing economies in the region, while Estonia is a digital country with one of the highest levels of digitalization in the world. From next year, they will be the first country in the world to implement universal AI education.
"The two sides can cooperate and complement each other, especially in the fields of digital transformation, innovation, education and technology," he said. He believes that Vietnamese businesses do not need to be present in Estonia but can participate in Estonia's digital ecosystem. In return, the number of Estonian businesses present in Vietnam can increase from the current 35 to many times in the near future.
