On July 4, the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) in Vietnam organized a seminar and business connection to promote Japanese tourism in 2025 in Da Nang city.

The event was attended by representatives of the Consulate General of Japan in Da Nang , Da Nang Tourism Association, Vietnam Airlines Corporation - Central Region Branch, and about 50 travel businesses and tourism partners from Vietnam and Japan.

In his opening speech, Chief Representative of JNTO in Vietnam Matsumoto Fumi said that the number of Vietnamese visitors to Japan in 2024 will reach 621,100, an increase of 8.2% over the previous year, surpassing the record set in 2023. In the first 5 months of 2025 alone, the number of visitors reached 311,700, an increase of 9.6% over the same period last year.

According to Ms. Matsumoto Fumi, the recovery of international flights, especially from Da Nang to Narita and Kansai, is contributing to promoting tourism exchanges between the two countries; at the same time, creating favorable conditions for tourists from the Central region (Vietnam) to access Japan more easily.

However, currently up to 80% of Vietnamese people have never been to Japan, showing that the market still has a lot of untapped potential.

In addition, Japanese tourism still depends on traditional tours along the "Golden Route" and peak seasons such as cherry blossoms or red leaves, putting pressure on tourism infrastructure in major cities.

In 2025, JNTO identified the Osaka-Kansai World Expo (opening in April) as an opportunity to introduce new destinations, distribute visitor flows and travel times more reasonably.

This workshop was attended by 22 tourism service providers from Japan and 26 travel agencies in the Central region of Vietnam. The event aimed to enhance understanding, exchange experiences and expand connections between partners of the two countries.

Japanese Consul General in Da Nang, Mr. Mori Takero, commented that the merger of Da Nang city with Quang Nam province will create a new tourist center with large scale and potential, connecting resources such as: World Heritage Hoi An, My Son, green tourism areas and local communities.

Mr. Mori Takero also said that the Osaka-Da Nang route operated by Vietnam Airlines has been resumed, while the Narita-Da Nang route will be upgraded with larger aircraft. This is a favorable condition to promote bilateral tourism, especially in the context of the World Exhibition (EXPO 2025) in Osaka attracting the attention of Vietnamese visitors.

In the first six months of 2025, Da Nang recorded an economic growth rate of 11%. The city is aiming to form a Free Trade Zone and an International Financial Center, creating conditions for a strong increase in the flow of commercial visitors.

During the Japanese Prime Minister's visit to Vietnam last April, the two sides set a target of reaching 2 million two-way tourist arrivals per year.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Da Nang City Nguyen Thi Hoai An said that the city currently has the largest area in the country, with more than 11,800km2 and a population of over 3 million people. The event opens up great potential in terms of space, infrastructure and development resources.

In its orientation to 2030, Da Nang aims to become a high-quality tourism and service center, a creative destination in Southeast Asia, aiming to become one of the leading tourist centers in Asia by 2045.

Japan is currently a key international tourist market for Da Nang. In 2024, the city welcomed more than 179,000 Japanese visitors; in the first 6 months of 2025 alone, it reached more than 108,000, nearly double the same period in 2024. Currently, there are 11 direct flights per week between Da Nang (Vietnam) and Japan (7 flights from Narita, 4 flights from Osaka).

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoai An expressed her hope that this workshop will be an effective bridge to help businesses from both sides strengthen cooperation, develop markets and implement specific, practical and sustainable promotion programs in the coming time./.
