JICA in Vietnam: Continuing the mission of creating for people

At each university - where volunteers are working - there are different teaching materials, curricula, textbooks or training objectives, but JICA volunteers found that the common point is that students encounter some difficulties in conversation lessons such as shyness in communication, poor pronunciation or fear of talking to foreigners.

They also found that students' motivation to learn Japanese decreased somewhat during the course of learning Japanese, especially at higher levels.

To find a solution to the above problem, JICA volunteers and fellow lecturers held a workshop to share experiences and knowledge to improve the quality of conversation classes, increase the attractiveness of the class, how to evaluate and give conversation tests and how to improve students' learning motivation, as well as study typical cases to draw lessons.

At the event, Mr. Kobayashi Yosuke, Chief Representative of JICA Vietnam Office, shared information about the current situation of Japanese language education in Vietnam as well as factors affecting Japanese language education in the future. Mr. Kobayashi emphasized JICA's commitment to continue supporting Vietnam in developing Japanese language education and contributing to the socio -economic development of Vietnam through local grassroots activities of Japanese volunteers.

Japanese language education is one of the areas that JICA's Volunteer Dispatch Program is focusing on supporting. Currently, JICA is dispatching 10 volunteers specializing in Japanese language education to work in Vietnam.

The JICA Volunteer Dispatch Program in Vietnam began in 1995 and this year 2025 marks its 30th anniversary. The first three volunteers dispatched were volunteers in the field of Japanese Language Teaching at Vietnam National University, Hanoi, Foreign Trade University, and Hanoi University of Foreign Languages. In total, JICA has dispatched over 750 volunteers to Vietnam over the past 30 years, contributing to supporting socio-economic development at the grassroots level.

The areas supported by volunteers are diverse, including Japanese language teaching, health care, rehabilitation, local development, tourism, and support for children and people with disabilities.
