On March 17, the My Tho City Police, Tien Giang province, announced that they had served the indictment decision and executed the order to detain Nguyen Trong Ngan (41 years old, residing in An Hiep commune, Ba Tri district, Ben Tre province) for two months to investigate the crime of "Fraudulent appropriation of property".
According to the investigating agency, on February 27, authorities in Tien Giang province received a report from a woman about being scammed and losing her property.
The woman stated that she met and befriended the account "Tuan Minh" through Zalo, and then they arranged to meet in a hotel room in My Tho City.
At the hotel, Ngan proposed marriage to her and bought a ring to build trust. Afterward, Ngan took her to buy a real gold ring, then swapped it with a fake one, and then drove her to a shopping mall.
Here, Ngan asked the woman to give him her phone to hold while he went to park his motorbike. Then Ngan rode away on his motorbike. After about 15 minutes, when Ngan didn't return, the woman called a taxi back to the hotel and continued to wait.
By the afternoon of the same day, when Ngan had not contacted her, the woman realized she had been scammed and reported it to the police. She stated that the stolen property included a motorbike and a mobile phone worth over 70 million VND.
At 4:30 PM on March 5th, the My Tho City Police, in coordination with the Chau Thanh District Police of Ben Tre Province, set up a roadblock and arrested Ngan in Chau Thanh District, Ben Tre Province. The officers seized one motorbike, one mobile phone, and over 80 million VND.
During questioning at the investigative agency, Ngan confessed to having committed two other scams using similar methods in Ben Tre province and Ho Chi Minh City.
According to the investigation, Ngan has four previous convictions for "Robbery" and "Fraudulent appropriation of property".
