The independent Middle East news platform L'orient today reported that the ministry noted that since the Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire agreement came into effect on November 27 to December 22, Israel has carried out more than 816 ground and air attacks on Lebanon, shelling border villages, booby-trapping homes, destroying many residential areas and blocking roads.
Such violations complicate Beirut's efforts to implement the provisions of UN Resolution 1701, hinder the deployment of the Lebanese army in the south of the country and pose a serious threat to international efforts to achieve security and stability in the region, the Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Migration stressed.
Lebanon also urged the Security Council to take a firm and clear stance on Israel's violations and work to force the country to respect its obligations.
At the same time, Beirut called for increased support for the United Nations Peacekeeping Force (UNIFIL) and the Lebanese army to protect the country's sovereignty and assist the Middle Eastern country in restoring stability.
Earlier, on December 23, during a visit to the southern city of Khiam, Lebanon's interim Prime Minister Najib Mikati also called on the Committee responsible for monitoring the ceasefire to pressure Israel to end its violations of the ceasefire agreement.
He urged the committee to ensure the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory according to the terms of the agreement.
The Lebanese prime minister also called for a meeting with French and US officials from the Ceasefire Monitoring Committee on December 24 to request an acceleration of Israel's withdrawal from Lebanese territory before the 60-day deadline, which ends on January 26, 2025.
Cross-border fighting between Hezbollah and the Israeli army began in October 2023 and escalated into a full-scale conflict in September 2024. The two sides reached a ceasefire agreement, which took effect on November 27.
Under the agreement, the two sides will temporarily cease fighting for 60 days, Hezbollah will withdraw north of the Litani River and the Israeli army will withdraw from southern Lebanon, while the Lebanese army will increase its military presence in the south of the country to 10,000 troops.
