Tan Phuong's singing voice

Việt NamViệt Nam14/02/2024

In my youth, I heard of and was captivated by the voice of singer Diệu Thuý. She was the first female solo singer to record this song on the Voice of Vietnam radio station , and her voice was considered exceptionally beautiful and technically superb at the time. Singers Doãn Tần, Lê Dung, and Ma Bích Việt were all military artists, having studied at the Vietnam National Academy of Music under the tutelage and guidance of teacher Diệu Thuý. They later became renowned artists, winning international music awards and receiving the title of People's Artist of Vietnam...

Later, singers like My Linh and Tan Phuong were the next generation of students taught by teacher Dieu Thuy. If you listen carefully, even after a long time and despite their maturity, the voices of these young singers always bear the mark of teacher Dieu Thuy—in the sound, the tone, and the emotional depth of their voices—a beautiful, refined, skillful, and technically accomplished voice...

Singer Tan Phuong graduated from the Vocal Department of the Vietnam National Academy of Music in the class of 2001-2009. She won a Silver Medal at the National Folk Song Singing Competition in 2005 and first prize at the Hanoi Best Voice Singing Competition in 2006. Currently, Tan Phuong is a lecturer in the Vocal Department at the Central University of Arts Education.

Tan Phuong shared: “I was originally a girl from Ha Nam province who loved art. I was accepted into the National Conservatory of Music and studied under Meritorious Artist Dieu Thuy. Ms. Dieu Thuy is a wonderful teacher with a kind heart and immense love for her students. For the first four years at the Conservatory, Ms. Dieu Thuy raised me at home, carefully nurturing my studies and providing daily vocal training, so I quickly built a very solid foundation. After that, I went to university and won first prize in the Hanoi Singing Contest, then the Sao Mai Contest. From there, I began my performing career, with my teacher – People's Artist Quang Tho – arranging my songs and creating opportunities for me to perform on stages both domestically and internationally. I am truly very happy with such teachers and with my artistic path…”

What is truly admirable about Tan Phuong is that she repaid everything she received from her teachers, such as Ms. Dieu Thuy and Mr. Quang Tho, during her student life. Not only did she win numerous prestigious art awards, but after graduating and becoming a lecturer at the University of Music Education, following the example of her predecessors, she passed on all her knowledge and boundless love to the students she trained. Like Ms. Dieu Thuy and Mr. Quang Tho, Tan Phuong nurtured and trained many artists who quickly rose to fame as new stars in the art world, and she remains a teacher cherished and loved by generations of her students.

I have listened to Tan Phuong's CDs many times, such as the Buddhist music album "Ben Chan Nhu," which, as Associate Professor Dr. Cu Le Duyen, Deputy Head of the Department of Theory, Composition, and Conducting - Vietnam National Academy of Music, commented: "This is a soulful voice; listeners can easily appreciate the sublime and sacred quality of Buddhist music, contributing to awakening the soul towards goodness, happiness, and peace." Similarly, the CD "Ben Que," with many songs rich in folk elements, is performed by a skilled classical voice and evokes strong and passionate emotions..."

But for me personally, perhaps the songs by singer Tan Phuong that evoke the strongest emotions are "Nguoi Ha Noi" (The People of Hanoi). Many listeners consider Tan Phuong to be one of the best singers of this classic song, and she also sings "Me Yeu Con" (Mother Loves Her Child) by composer Nguyen Van Ty very sweetly; and especially "Xa Khoi" (Far from Shore) by composer Nguyen Tai Tue. Her voice is beautiful, her delivery is subtle, and her emotions are particularly passionate, as if adding waves and wind to the song. And because of that, I think of the generations of singers with the middle name Tan, all excellent artists, who all sing "Xa Khoi" wonderfully: Tan Nhan, Tan Nhan, and Tan Phuong... Is that true?
