Cultivate the habit of reading
Every Monday morning, after the flag-raising ceremony at Cao Van Ngoc Primary School (Con Dao District), students participate in introducing good books to all students in the school. In addition, the school organizes 5 storytelling competitions based on the book “Lighting up Dreams” in rotation for 5 grades of the school during the year. This competition not only encourages students to read books but also provides an opportunity for them to share their feelings, thoughts, and valuable lessons learned from reading books.
Tran Bao Nam, a first grader at Cao Van Ngoc Primary School, said: "I got to read many good books from the library and participated in the story-telling contest based on the book "Lighting up Dreams" for grade 1 on April 4."
The school's reading movement was "fueled" right from the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year, when the school was awarded the "Dream Library" by the community activity group Glink Academy (Ho Chi Minh City) with 550 books of various genres. The lovely books are placed in colorful and beautifully shaped bookcases. The Dream Library is also equipped with learning support equipment with a total value of nearly 135 million VND. The fresh library space, many good books, attract students at the school to access good and useful books.
In addition, the school library also creates video clips introducing good books and posts them on the school's social networking site so that students can choose good books. This fosters a love of reading and discovering knowledge.
The Book Club of Tran Nguyen Han High School, Vung Tau City is also a good model in building a reading culture at school. Each discussion, presentation or introduction of new book content of the monthly club activities is always exciting. Before that, members spend time reading their favorite books. At each activity, the Club's Board of Directors will select good book introductions to post on the Club's social networking site to spread the habit of reading to students throughout the school. In addition, there are rich activities such as integrating games, presentations, dramatization, writing contests on topics related to holidays and major events of the country to inspire students' love of books.
In particular, the school library space also attracts many students from all grades to come and read and borrow books because of its diverse book collection and airy, friendly reading space. In 2024, Tran Nguyen Han High School received a Certificate of Merit from the Provincial Youth Union in the movement to develop a reading culture.
Persistently develop reading culture
It is a fact that most schools currently lack books to meet the reading needs of students, especially schools in remote areas. In order to provide more books and materials for schools, the Provincial Museum - Library has increased the organization of book festivals to bring books to students, combined with book donations or book rotation. These activities are enthusiastically received by teachers and students of the school.
Present at Lang Dai 1 Primary School, Long Dat District in mid-March, we felt the children's love when being introduced to nearly 1,000 books for children. Not only reading books, the children also interacted with the speakers through a quiz game about books; and were guided on how to choose good and suitable books to study and practice life skills.
Through attractive and suitable activities from the book festival, encourage and develop effective reading skills in students. Thereby, kindling a passion for reading, further training reading habits for students.
Mr. Huynh Toi, Deputy Director of the Provincial Museum - Library, said that in April, the Provincial Museum - Library went to 8 schools to organize book festivals. Along with that, the organization "The book I love", "Drawing pictures according to books" called on many students to participate in response to Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day (April 21). The activities in response to Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day aim to honor the value of books and develop a widespread reading culture.
