Electricity consumption in Ho Chi Minh City continues to rise.

(Chinhphu.vn) - Despite several heavy thunderstorms since the beginning of May, Ho Chi Minh City has generally maintained a prolonged period of hot and humid weather. For many consecutive days, the highest daily temperature reached 37-38 degrees Celsius, while the actual perceived temperature was significantly higher, especially at noon. In this context, the demand for electricity for cooling continues to increase, leading to a sharp rise in electricity consumption in Ho Chi Minh City.

Electricity consumption in Ho Chi Minh City continues to rise.

Specifically, on May 8th, the city's total electricity consumption reached approximately 191.5 million kWh, surpassing previous peaks on April 7th and 8th, 2026 (approximately 191 million kWh). By May 12th, the city's total electricity consumption surged, reaching 195.09 million kWh, 9.1% higher than the highest daily consumption in 2025 (178.8 million kWh on August 5th, 2025).

On a weekly basis, electricity consumption for the week of May 4-10 reached 1.282 billion kWh, the highest since the beginning of the year. Forecasts for the week of May 11-17, 2026, indicate that total electricity consumption will continue to increase, reaching 1.3 billion kWh, 1.78% higher than the consumption of the previous week.

According to weather forecasts, there will be rain from now until the end of the month, and temperatures will decrease somewhat, but not significantly. There will still be periods of hot, humid weather. On the other hand, early season rains are often accompanied by thunderstorms, leading to many incidents affecting the power grid such as fallen trees and flying corrugated iron sheets.

The forecast indicates that the city's electricity consumption will continue to increase this week (May 11-17).

Against this backdrop, the Ho Chi Minh City Power Corporation has directed its power companies and member units to focus resources, strengthen inspections, and promptly handle incidents (if they occur). The Corporation requires its units to proactively implement short-term and medium-term solutions to ensure and improve the quality of electricity supply, prioritizing important customers such as hospitals, data centers, industrial parks, and schools (especially during the period of organizing entrance exams for higher education and university).

In parallel, Ho Chi Minh City Power Corporation requests customers and electricity users to continue paying attention to using electricity economically and safely, both to minimize the impact on household expenses and to contribute to ensuring the city's energy security.
