Little animal "stars"
People around the world have been captivated by the arrival of two famous baby animals: Moo Deng the hippo and Pesto the penguin. Both became famous just a few months after their birth.
Moo Deng the hippo comes from Thailand.
Atthapon “Benz” Nundee (zookeeper), who made the viral videos of Moo Deng, filmed her in her enclosure at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo (Thailand). A statement from TikTok said: "Moo Deng, the adorable pygmy hippo from Thailand, and Pesto, the oversized emperor penguin from Australia, along with other Knights of the Round Table, have captured the hearts of the Internet community around the world."
Many people have become enamored with Moo Deng and Pesto, following their daily activities on social media, selling animal-themed merchandise, and creating animal-inspired artwork. Although the trending word and catchphrase only appeared in August, it has gone viral so much that Dictionary.com has named it the Word of the Year for 2024. Many influencers and celebrities, such as Olivia Rodrigo, Lindsay Lohan, and Khloe Kardashian, have even added "demure" to their vocabularies. TikTok wrote in a statement: "The #Demure trend has not only coined a new phrase, but has also empowered self-expression and influenced many different trends."

Delicious dishes from cucumber
Logan Moffitt, a food influencer known as “the cucumber guy” who specializes in cucumber salads, became wildly popular in 2024 after sharing his cucumber recipes. Moffitt uses the same cooking tools in his videos: a cucumber, a grater, and a clear cylindrical glass jar. In his most viral TikTok video, with over 43 million views, Moffitt makes his own version of a creamy cucumber California roll.
TikTok users’ desire to buy cucumbers has left grocery stores facing a shortage of the vegetable. According to FreshDirect’s senior vice president of merchandising, the online grocer saw a 172% increase in cucumber sales in July compared to the previous year, which can be attributed to the TikTok trend.
While his recipes have garnered millions of views, they've also sparked backlash, with a salmonella outbreak linked to cucumbers and an alleged increase in emergency room visits due to his cooking methods. Newbie chefs, like Jackson Dean, have gone viral after cutting their fingers while using a grater, even though Moffitt has told viewers to "be careful" when using the sharp tool.
