The proposal was made in a draft “National Security Agreement” that TikTok submitted to the US government in August 2022. The agreement also includes provisions for funding data protection units and guarantees that ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, will not have access to US user data.

However, TikTok said the US side stopped negotiations after receiving this proposal and ignored further requests for meetings.

The revelation comes as TikTok and ByteDance are suing the US government over a new law that would force them to sell their US assets or face a nationwide ban. TikTok argues that the law is unconstitutional and sets a dangerous precedent that threatens the development of an open internet environment.

The legal battle between TikTok and the US government is expected to continue to be tense in the coming time. The appeals court will hold arguments on this case in September.

Meanwhile, ByteDance continues to experiment with new products, such as private photo-sharing app Whee, showing the company's ambition to expand its influence in the social media market.
