Former Chelsea and Tottenham striker Timo Werner has agreed to join San Jose Earthquakes in the MLS.

Werner went to the US to seek playing opportunities.

This season, Werner has had almost no opportunities to play for RB Leipzig, with a total of only 13 minutes of playing time. The German star was informed in the summer that he was no longer in the team's plans.

Since returning to Leipzig after a loan spell at Tottenham, Werner has not started a single game, only coming on as a substitute three times, including two brief appearances in injury time.

Werner's struggles at Leipzig have led to his third departure from the club, following moves in 2020 and 2024. Prior to that, the 29-year-old striker moved to Chelsea for £47 million and then to Tottenham on loan last season.

San Jose Earthquakes, a team looking for a quality center, are expected to give Werner a chance to shine in MLS. He will be given one of the special positions for players earning above the salary cap in the Quakes' roster, which still has one spot available for the remainder of the transfer window.

Last season, San Jose finished 10th in the MLS Western Conference, just a hair's breadth away from a playoff spot. The addition of a star like Werner is expected to bring new strength, helping the team improve their performance and aim for qualification for the playoffs in the new season.
